El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Chuck Broerman is urging voters to prepare for the March 1 caucus, noting that precinct locations may have changed for many people.

Colorado Republicans and Democrats will gather for caucus meetings to elect delegates that will eventually determine who gets on the ballot in their party from county commissioner races to president of the United States.

“Colorado’s caucus system is a unique way for members of the two major political parties to be involved at the grass-roots level,” Broerman said. “Since your precinct number and caucus location may have changed since 2014, I urge anyone thinking about going to their caucus to visit www.epcvotes.com to find their precinct number and caucus location.”

Voters can also go to www.gazettedev.gazette.com/2016-caucus and use a caucus locater tool developed by The Gazette.

Turnout for caucuses for both parties is historically lower than primary election turnout, in part because the system can seem complicated. Voters not registered as Republicans or Democrats are not able to participate in the process. The caucus begins at 7 p.m. and voters need to check into their precinct to participate.

Although the parties run the caucus process, the Clerk and Recorder’s Office will be open until 8 p.m. Tuesday to assist voters on the phone at 575-VOTE (8683).
