1,200-acre fire on Fort Carson now 65 percent contained

A grass fire on the southern reaches of Fort Carson will be 65 percent contained as of 6 p.m. Sunday, spokeswoman Dani Johnson said.

The fire started during a training exercise Saturday evening and spread to 1,200 acres, drawing fire crews from Colorado Springs, Fountain and rural communities to help out. The fire is near the Turkey Creek Recreation area. It has not spread beyond Fort Carson lands and is not a threat to communities in the area, Johnson said.

On Sunday, a pair of Chinook helicopters dropped water on the blaze and bulldozers were building a line to contain the fire, Johnson said. Sunday’s more humid conditions helped, she added.

While the fire was not fully contained, it had not grown, and many of the crews were leaving. Some Fort Carson crews will spend Sunday night monitoring the fire.
