Shoppers, mark your calendars.

Nordstrom Rack, the popular outlet store for Seattle-based upscale retailer Nordstrom, will open April 28 on Colorado Springs’ north side. The retailer announced a year ago it was coming to the Springs, but now has firmed up its opening date for the store.

Nordstrom Rack will occupy 31,058 square feet at the Chapel Hills East shopping center, southeast of Academy and Briargate boulevards and directly south of the Chapel Hills Mall. It will join Best Buy, Whole Foods, Old Navy, Pep Boys and other stores and restaurants at the center.

Nordstrom Rack sells a wide selection of apparel, accessories and shoes at 30 percent to 70 percent off regular prices, according to the retailer. The stores carry merchandise from Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com, as well as specially purchased items from many top brands sold by Nordstrom.

Remodeling is underway inside the future Nordstrom Rack space in the Springs, and a sign along Academy Boulevard tells passers-by that the retailer is “coming soon.”

Nordstrom officials said they decided to open in Colorado Springs to target Pikes Peak region shoppers.

Up to now, they’ve had to drive to Northern Colorado to find a Nordstrom Rack. The retailer has four of its outlet stores in the Denver area and another in Fort Collins; Nordstrom also has three full-line department stores in Colorado.

The retailer said it likes to locate stores in established shopping centers that have good access. Chapel Hills East, highly visible along the busy North Academy retail corridor, fits that bill.

Chapel Hills East and its sister property across Academy, Chapel Hills West, are owned by Ohio-based DDR Corp., a real estate investment trust that owns and manages nearly 370 retail properties in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
