Monday’s prep roundup: Doherty hockey bounces back in win over Castle View

Highlights from Monday’s preps action around the Pikes Peak region.

HOCKEY

Doherty 7, Castle View 2

At Sertich: Noah Johnston and Zach Fellinger each had two goals and an assist as Doherty bounced back from Friday’s five-goal loss to Lewis-Palmer with a win by the same margin Monday afternoon.

The Spartans (7-5, 5-4 Peak Conference) stormed to a 3-0 lead in the first period off goals from Drew Luebbers, Fellinger and Johnston.

Castle View (3-7, 3-7) rallied to within 3-2 after two goals by Adam Zimmerer in the second period.

Johnston helped Doherty regain the momentum with his second goal 54 seconds into the third period. Just 41 seconds later, Tyler Gard’s goal from Jake Denney and Scott Sellers made it a 5-2 game.

Fellinger later scored on the power play. Michael Gipson completed the scoring in the final minute.

Heritage 9, Palmer 0

At Sertich: Palmer managed only 12 shots on goal and fell behind 4-0 after one period as the Terrors remained winless on the season.

Caleb Espinoza made 38 saves for the Terrors (0-9-1), who previously had ended a eight-game losing streak with a 5-5 tie with Coronado on Jan. 13.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Arapahoe 53, Palmer 40

At Palmer: Dave Shackelford has noticed a disturbing trend with his basketball team recently.

“For the last three or four games, we’ve started out slowly,” said Shackelford, whose Terrors fell behind 10-0 and never recovered in a nonleague home loss to Arapahoe. “That’s hard to overcome. Hopefully, we can keep talking about it and we can back it up.”

Tashika Burrell led Palmer (5-10) with nine points, while Bailey Smith added eight points and four steals.

Down 14 at the end of the first quarter, the Terrors battled back and got the deficit to six but got no closer.

“We played hard and kept fighting,” Shackelford said.

Palmer travels to Coronado in a Metro League match on Tuesday.

Woodland Park puts Kemp on leave

Second-year girls’ basketball coach Kris Kemp has been put on leave from her coaching and teaching duties at Woodland Park.

Panthers athletic director Michael DeWall confirmed the report Monday, citing personal and private matters but did not comment further.

Del Garrick, the school’s principal, will finish the season as head coach.

Last season, Kemp led Woodland Park to a 10-13 mark, a five-game improvement from 2013-14.

Woodland Park is winless in 12 games this season.
