Prep roundup: Manitou swimmers win six of 11 events at Hornet Invite prelims
Highlights of Friday’s preps action around the Pikes Peak region:
GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Hornet Invitational
At Pueblo County: Manitou Springs took first in the 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays and also captured individual victories in four races Friday during preliminaries.
Veronica Morin won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races, while Emily Dolloff-Holt won the 200 individual medley and Samantha White took first in the 100 breaststroke.
Other top performances were delivered by Allana Clarke, Rampart (100 fly); Jessica Bye, Coronado (500 free); Maggie Tibbett, Cheyenne Mountain (100 back); and Rampart (400 free relay).
WRESTLING
Mel Smith Husky Invite
At Florence: Cheyenne Mountain, fresh off its historical dual victory over Discovery Canyon on Thursday, advanced nine of its wrestlers into the quarterfinals Friday.
Steve Mattorano (138 pounds), Marquise Joseph (145), Zac Garrard (195) and Joey Sherwood (285) all had pins in the second round to pace the Indians.
Five wrestlers from Canon City won both of their matches, highlighted by Lucas Bufmack, who had a 15-0 decision followed by a pin after only 25 seconds.
HOCKEY
Valor Christian 3, Cheyenne Mountain 3 (OT)
At Colorado College: Ryan Smith scored twice, including the tying goal with 38 seconds left in regulation as Cheyenne Mountain rallied to tie Valor Christian (4-4-1, 3-3-1 Peak Conference).
Ryan McCann stopped 29 of 32 shots for the Indians (5-4-1, 4-1-1).
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Doherty 64, Fountain-Fort Carson 36
At Doherty: Led by 16 points from Dalven Brushier and Brevin Brimble, Doherty won its fifth straight game and remained unbeaten in 5A Metro League play.
BJ Hardy added 10 points for Doherty (11-2, 4-0).
T.J. Lucero led the Trojans (2-9, 1-3) with 16 points.
Palmer Ridge 58, Discovery Canyon 51
At Palmer Ridge: A nine-point swing in the third quarter made all the difference as Palmer Ridge (6-4, 3-1 PPAC) rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Thunder (3-8, 0-3).
Sand Creek 57, Falcon 52
At Falcon: Trailing by eight with less than four minutes left, Sand Creek finished on an 18-5 run.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Falcons (3-10, 0-4 PPAC) led the Scorpions (8-4, 3-1 PPAC) 47-39.
Vista Ridge 77, Air Academy 48
At Vista Ridge: Hunter Maldonado led all scorers with 22 points as Vista Ridge broke a six-game losing streak against Air Academy.
The Wolves (9-4, 2-2 PPAC) led 23-12 after one quarter and outscored the Kadets (6-5, 1-3) in every quarter.
Tabor Morse led Air Academy with seven points.
Lewis-Palmer 72, Cheyenne Mountain 49
At Lewis-Palmer: Lewis-Palmer won its ninth straight and remained the lone undefeated team in PPAC play by beating Cheyenne Mountain.
The Rangers (10-1, 4-0) pulled away in the second half after taking a 30-20 lead on the Indians (5-5, 2-1) heading into intermission.
Mesa Ridge 61, TCA 55
At TCA: Mesa Ridge (5-8, 2-2 4A Metro) used a late run to shake off pesky TCA (4-8, 2-2).
The Grizzlies led by as many as 10, but the Titans cut the deficit to one with less than one minute left.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Mesa Ridge 77, TCA 32
At Mesa Ridge: Kylee Shook had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Chloe Welch added a season-high 21 points to help Mesa Ridge win its fifth straight and remain the 4A Metro League’s lone unbeaten team.
Ashley Bowen added 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Grizzlies (11-1, 4-0), which held TCA (4-7, 1-3) to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters.
Doherty 61, Fountain-Fort Carson 37
At Doherty: Aubriana Noti scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds as the Spartans won their third in a row.
Kalani Poloa added 10 points for Doherty (9-4, 3-1 5A Metro), which also got 12 steals from Camrynne Mack.
Pine Creek 76, Coronado 23
At Pine Creek: Pine Creek (8-3, 4-0 5A Metro) won its fifth straight, jumping all over Coronado (3-9, 0-3) early, leading 24-4 after the first quarter.
Sand Creek 74, Falcon 57
At Sand Creek: Sand Creek (8-1, 3-0) won its eighth straight and moved to 45-0 all-time in Pikes Peak Athletic Conference play.
Khiya Adams scored 20 points for the Falcons (6-7, 2-2) in a losing cause.
Cheyenne Mountain 48, Lewis-Palmer 41
At Cheyenne Mountain: Carly Miller led Cheyenne Mountain with 10 points.
Alex Taylor added nine points and nine rebounds for the Indians (5-6, 2-2 Pikes Peak).
The Rangers fell to 4-7, 0-4.
Manitou Springs 83, Salida 38
At Manitou Springs: Manitou Springs had no trouble with Salida to improve to 10-0.
St. Mary’s 53, Trinidad 41
At Trinidad: St. Mary’s (10-1, 4-0 Tri-Peaks) trailed by three early, but turned it around with a big second-quarter run to record a road victory.
The Pirates outscored Trinidad 14-4 in the second quarter to take a 28-21 lead at the break.
