Must See Must Do: Best bets for weekend fun in and around Colorado Springs

Here”s a look at what’s on tap this weekend in the Colorado Springs area:

FRIDAY

– Miguel Dakota didn’t let the results on ABC’s “America’s Got Talet” deter his forward progress. A year ago he released the album “Love & Freedom” with his band Miguel Dakota and the Differents, toured the country in support and moved to Denver. The band plans to release an EP of new music in March and Dakota hopes to finish a solo project later this year. He and his band will perform at The Gold Room on Friday. Read more here.

– Festival Fridays in Pueblo opens its 30th year starting this weekend. First up: the Tejano sounds of Pueblo’s Bad Habitz (badhabitzband.net), so get ready to dance. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center and music starts at 7 p.m. Tickets $8 at the door, 210 N. Santa Fe Ave., sdc-arts.org, 719-295-7200.

SATURDAY

– Their publicity says they’re packing clubs and destroying dance floors, and they have two albums and more than 70 remixes. Coming Saturday to Rawkus: Designer Drugs. Also on the bill are Nova 9, Saltee and MT Faces. Concert time 8:30 p.m. at 3506 N. Academy Blvd., $10-15, rawkusnation.com.

– Hear some of the most beautiful of the classic hymns when pianist/singer John Redmon kicks off his album release tour at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Palace Of Peace Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1150 Aeroplaza Drive. Some of his favorites are “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” “My Jesus I Love Thee,” “Higher Ground” and “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.” Joining Redmon for the free concert are George Sisneros, Nickole Semakula, Ron McMillon and Thomas Dawson Jr. palaceofpeace.org.

– Facebookers have found them in a big way. Now Nashville duo Walker McGuire (Jordan Walker and Johnny McGuire), who were “Chasin’ the Dream” with syndicated radio’s Big D and Bubba and on Armed Forces Radio, will make their way to Cowboys, 25 N. Tejon St., at 7 p.m. Saturday, singing hits including “The Color Pink.” One’s a Texas boy, the other’s from Kansas and they’ve only been together since 2012. MONDAY

– Martin Luther King Jr. events at Colorado College on Monday: All People’s Breakfast, 8 a.m., El Pomar Sports Center, 44 W. Cache la Poudre St., $7 tickets available at Worner Center, 902 N. – Time for one of the most fun events during the Stock Show in Denver. Up around 100 of the professional cowboys, in cowboy attire, hats and chaps, are headed to the ski slopes. It’s the 42nd annual Bud Light Cowboy Downhill in Steamboat Springs, which includes a slalom and the wild and crazy stampede down the slopes. Join the fun if you’re up Steamboat way. THURSDAY, JAN. 21

– OPENING: If you’ve ever wondered what Pulitzer Prize-caliber drama is, Springs Ensemble Theatre opens its 2016 season with a Pulitzer finalist, “The (Curious Case of the) Watson Intelligence” by Madeleine George. It’s all about the worker, inventive “Watsons” of the world and throughout history. As SET says, “supported by a whole host of “Watsons,” – stage runners, designers, operators – SET is proud to produce ‘The (Curious Case of the) Watson Intelligence’ as an homage to the people who make magic happen.” It runs 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday through Feb. 6, 4 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, $15, 1903 E. – Hear Here Poetry Slam puts the spotlight on slam poet Jared Paul Thursday. A youth open mic is at 5 p.m., followed by a workshop and open mic and the Poetry Slam at 8:15 p.m. in Lon Chaney Theater at the City Auditorium, 231 E. Kiowa St. $5 donation suggested.
