VOLLEYBALL

L-P grad Smith transferring to Colorado

Former Lewis-Palmer star volleyball player Alexa Smith has joined the Colorado Buffaloes after playing her freshman season at Purdue, CU coach Jesse Mahoney announced.

Smith, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, will have three years of eligibility.

“I’m so excited to be back in Colorado and to represent this state once again,” Smith said in a news release. “I am really looking forward to playing for coach Mahoney and being part of the program at CU. I am also very grateful to be able to play close to home and to be closer to my family.”

Smith led Lewis-Palmer to back-to-back Class 4A state titles in 2013 and 2014. Both those year’s she was named The Gazette Big Schools Volleyball Peak Performer of the Year.

She was a member of the USA Volleyball junior national team in 2013 and 2014, and won a gold medal at the NORCECA Continental U20 Championships in Guatemala in 2014.

“She is a true six-rotation player that can execute all skills at a high level, but having watched her in the club ranks, what really stood out to me with Alexa is her competitive spirit,” Mahoney said in a news release. “She knows what it takes to play and succeed at a high level and she will fit in well with the culture that we are building here in our program.”

Colorado finished with a 19-13 record in the 2015 season.
