Monday's prep roundup: Liberty holds off league rival Rampart in hockey

HOCKEY

Liberty 3, Rampart 2

At Sertich: Andre Ogren scored two goals, then Liberty held off a furious comeback attempt in the third period as the Lancers beat their Academy School District 20 rival in Peak Conference action Monday.

Ogren gave Liberty (4-3-1, 3-1 Peak Conference) the lead for good at 7:28 of the first period off an assist from Ryan Bishop. In the second period, Mikey Wilson doubled the lead with assists from Connor McIlhany and Ryan Eichsteadt, then Ogren scored from Michael Dailey two minutes into the third period for a 3-0 lead.

Garrett Cunfer put Rampart (3-8, 2-6) on the board at 4:16 from Trevor Jesse and James Adams. Two minutes later, Patrick McCann’s power-play goal from Wesley Moore and Nate Purewal made it a 3-2 game.

Ryan Oullette stopped 19 of 21 shots to earn the win for Liberty. Chase Allen made 22 saves for the Rams.

Dakota Ridge 8, Pine Creek 0

At Sertich: Dakota Ridge scored three power-play goals and outshot Pine Creek 50-18 in a blowout nonleague victory.

Pine Creek (5-2-1) fell behind just 35 seconds into the game and trailed 2-0 at the end of the first period. That deficit ballooned to 6-0 heading into the third.

Wyatt Kiewicz stopped 42 of 50 shots for the Eagles, whose three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) came to an end.

Denver East 6, Air Academy 0

At Cadet Ice Arena: Denver East broke open a close game with four goals in the third period to deal Air Academy its second straight loss.

The Kadets (1-7, 1-6 Peak Conference) trailed 2-0 until Noah Hernandez higlighted a late outburst with three consecutive third-period goals for the Angels (5-2, 4-1), which outshot Air Academy 35-15.

At Pueblo East: Fountain-Fort Carson captured two relays and had four individual titles in a double-dual split.

Kristen Farmer touched first in the 200-yard individual medley for the Trojans, and she was joined by event champions Leanna Hensley (100 butterfly), Jesse Wright (500 freestyle) and Katie McLaughlin (100 backstroke).

Fountain-Fort Carson also clocked the best time in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

WRESTLING

Palmer 50, Manitou Springs 18

At Palmer: Larry Black, a state qualifier in 2015, continued his strong season at 220 pounds with a quick pin to lead Palmer to a big victory.

Black, who reached state at 195 pounds a year ago, improved to 12-1 in a new weight class after his 39-second pin of Christian Navarro.

Dre-Son Scruggs (138) and Max Nice (132) also recorded pins for the Terrors.

Manitou’s Julian Sanchez, fresh off his victory last weekend at the Denver South Rebel Wrestling Invite, made quick work of Richard Huff in the heavyweight class with a pin in 1:33.
