Ramsey blog: Gazette reader suggests removing facemasks to make football safer
Here’s a letter from a Gazette reader in response to Wednesday’s column about improving football safety. Dave, I have a simple solution to football head trauma. I know my suggestion will never come to pass, but it really is simple. Remove face masks. Players have become so aggressive using their heads because they feel their noses and teeth are safe. But, if they were worried about their nose and teeth were vulnerable they would not be so aggressive. Simple. When I was in high school football in the late 50s face masks were just starting to be used. I was an offensive lineman and at one time I did not have a mask. Later I had a single bar across my teeth. That actually made me feel more aggressive. Now, look at the masks. Goodness, even eye shields. Take the protection away, simple, but never gonna happen.
