2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax Turbo Diesel: Performance and fuel economy connect in mid-size pickup

The 2015 Chevy Colorado made midsize truck enthusiasts take notice – fun to drive with a pleasant interior, yet frugal at the pump.  It’s no surprise that the Colorado was named 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the Year and Cars.com Best Pickup Truck of 2015.

Taking it to another level for 2016, Chevy now offers an optional diesel engine in the Colorado, resulting in a stylish, high performance truck with impressive fuel economy. Retaining the same award-winning foundation of sophistication, maneuverability and proficiency along with cutting-edge technology, the addition of the Duramax turbo-diesel expands the lineup to offer a range of choices and potentials.

A well-appointed cabin is confident and attractive, as well as connected, with a bold instrument panel that is easy to view. Detail and finishes include enhanced headroom, halo lighting, and an open area at the front of the console for uncomplicated phone-charging. Sculpted door panels make for easy entry and exit, blended with cushioned seats designed for long-hauls and durability.

New in 2016 is Chevy’s MyLink system with compatible Apple CarPlay, putting iPhone features on the display in a simple-to-use manner.  Without taking your eyes off the road or hands off the wheel, drivers can make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music.  The new OnStar 4G LTE with standard built-in WiFi hotspot creates a mobile hub for drivers and passengers on the go.

Delivering a solid and capable attitude, the Colorado is also a real head-turner.  Offered in two- and four-seat extended-cab, and the five-seat crew cab body styles, along with two bed-lengths and four trim levels, buyers can tailor the truck to fit their lifestyle.

The base model comes in an extended cab with 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, daytime running lights, air conditioning, four-way power driver seat with manual recline, front bucket seats, rear-seat delete, power windows, rearview camera, and six-speaker AM/FM audio system with a 4.2 inch color display and USB and auxiliary inputs.

Higher trim levels, respectively, include the Work Truck, the LT, and the top-of-the-line Z71.  Bundled packages are available that offer upgrades such as EZ-lift tailgate, driver-side convex “spotter” mirror for better visibility, remote keyless entry, cruise control, a theft deterrent system, alloy wheels, upgraded audio with Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar telematics, and 4G LTE WiFi hotspot connectivity.

The LT trim level will deliver most of the Work Truck options in addition to 17-inch alloy wheels, overhead console, and an upgraded version of the MyLInk interface with an 8-inch touchscreen.  Additional choices include fog lights, remote start, projector-style headlights, heated mirrors, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and frontal collision and lane departure warning systems.

Even more upscale, the Z71 brings features from the LT package and offers opportunities for LED daytime running lights, all-terrain tires, off-road oriented suspension, locking rear differential, hill descent control, off-road lights, off-road “sport bar” and fender flares, 7-speaker Bose premium audio, navigation, and a dual-mode sport exhaust, just to name a few.

Chevy’s 2016 Colorado comes with three proven, well-built engines; a 2.5 liter inline-4 cylinder that generates 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft. of torque, a 3.6 liter V6 with 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft. torque matched with a six-speed automatic, and the turbocharged 2.8 liter 4-cylinder diesel engine furnishing 181 horsepower in conjunction with an impressive 369 lb-ft. of torque and standard six-speed automatic.

A new member of GM’s global family of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines, the Colorado features a variable-geometry turbocharger for ideal power and efficiency. Thanks to a extensive torque band the Duramax offers loads of power at low rpm, and the turbocharger delivers confident, immediate and efficient horsepower on demand. Furthermore, Duramax 2.8L is the cleanest diesel truck engine ever produced by General Motors, and meets some of the toughest U.S. emissions standards.

Engaging a number of occupant-focused safety systems, Colorado is built to keep drivers and passengers safe while traveling.  Standard safety equipment such as six air bags, including head curtain side air bags, standard rear-vision camera, StabiliTrak stability control system with rollover mitigation technology, trailer sway control, and hill start assist, help make sure drivers and passengers stay safe on the road.
