Monarch Pass closed after snowbanks collapse
Monarch Pass along U.S. 50 was closed just after noon on Tuesday after three large snowbanks collapsed on the road, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Crews are clearing the road and expect to have it open by about 1:30 p.m., said Tracy Trulove, a CDOT spokeswoman.
The small slides were instead caused by warm temperatures and collapsed snowbanks. Plows form the snowbanks when they clear the highway and typically the banks hold together in warmer temperatures.
“It wasn’t a full-on avalanche,” Trulove said. “They don’t come down with much force.”
