This week’s Pikes Peak-area prep rankings
Isaiah J. Downing
The final high school prep rankings for teams in the Pikes Peak region as winter break gets underway.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
BREAKDOWN: Doherty continues to surprise. The Spartans are on a five-game winning streak and have to be looking past the break already, eager to get into league play. Doherty had another tough test Monday evening on the road at undefeated Regis Jesuit (5-0). … Vista Ridge falls out of the rankings following a 30-point loss to Pueblo South and a loss to 4-6 Pueblo East in which the Wolves managed just 33 points. Air Academy, defending state champ, climbs in following four consecutive wins. … CSCS is one of the better teams in the state, regardless of classification. The Lions went 0-3 against three out-of-state teams that had a combined record of 17-15. The Lions held their own in each game to fall to 3-3 (the losses had not been registered on maxpreps.com by Sunday evening).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
BREAKDOWN: A 6-2 record looks more worthy of a No. 1 than a .500 record. Both teams suffered losses in the past week – Rampart falling to undefeated Grandview (6-0), while Pine Creek lost to Fossil Ridge (4-2). … The Wolves step into the rankings for the first time. Their three losses have come to teams with a combined record of 17-2. That’s some strong nonconference scheduling to prep them for league play. … It’s too bad that CSCS vs. Calhan got snowed out last week. We would have enjoyed seeing how the Bulldogs handled the Lions and freshman Megan Engesser.

HOCKEY
BREAKDOWN: When was the last time the Cougars were in the rankings? Good question. We’re not sure, not after Coronado had one win between the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. The Cougars’ only losses are to Lewis-Palmer and Cheyenne Mountain.
