Do you believe if you’ve seen one performance of “The Nutcracker” you’ve seen them all?
This version might surprise even the most jaded ballet fan.
The annual show by Colorado Youth Ballet and The Ballet Society of Colorado Springs will feature two New York City-based guest stars: Michele Wiles and Jay Donn.
Wiles will dance the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Donn will star as the lead Arabian dancer.
“Our dancers are pretty excited,” says Donna Lorrig, media relations specialist for Colorado Youth Ballet and The Ballet Society of Colorado Springs. “We always have awesome guest artists as part of our shows, but to have somebody internationally recognized is a little bit awe-inspiring.”
Wiles got to know the dancers a couple of years ago when she led a daylong master class alongside dance instructor Robert Sher-Machherndl. She left impressed.
“I thought the kids were uber-talented and that they take ballet very seriously and want to do this as a profession someday,” Wiles says. “This time I’ll have more of an opportunity to connect with some of them.”
She has an extensive resume that includes the American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company and American Ballet Theatre and awards such as a gold medal at the 18th International Ballet Competition and a finalist spot at the Paris International Dance Competition. She left ABT in 2011 to start her own company, BalletNext.
Donn, also a member of BalletNext, is the founder of flexing, a Brooklyn street dance style known for its rhythmic contortionist movement. He started dancing at 15 and rose to popularity when his group Ringmasters was featured on season three of MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew.” He’s flexed in music videos and feature films, including “Step Up 3D” and “Flex is Kings.”
Viewers can expect to see flexing in his “Nutcracker” role.
“This is probably the first time a flex dancer has been in a traditional ‘Nutcracker,'” says Wiles. “We’re breaking all sorts of boundaries here.”
She and Donn travel the country giving flex and point classes. They’ll do one in the Springs for ballet society dancers.
“It combines ballet and Jay’s improv style,” Wiles says. “It’s amazing to see ballerinas change. It’s another side of themselves that comes out, which I find fascinating, and a different energy they can use back in their ballet.”
