Must See Must Do: Best bets for fun this weekend around Colorado Springs

Here’s a look at some of your best bets for fun and entertainment this weekend in the Colorado Springs area.

FRIDAY

– Come celebrate the season Western style at the Flying W Wranglers Holiday Show at 8 p.m. Friday at Stargazers Theatre, 10 S. Parkside Drive. Fiddles and yodlin’ and good-old holiday campfire songs. $20 plus ticketing fee, stargazerstheatre.com.

– Looks like the viewer’s choice for Movie Night at The Broadmoor is holiday comedy favorite “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell. The Empty Stocking Fund feature is $10 and includes valet parking, popcorn and soda and cookies to go with the movie. FRIDAY-SATURDAY

– In the candlelight holiday beauty of Shove Memorial Chapel at Colorado College, 1010 N. Nevada Ave., come experience a program of eclectic music from medieval to modern and spoken word in “Wintersong.” Presented by the chamber choir Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble, conducted by Deborah Jenkins Teske, programs are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. FRIDAY-SUNDAY

– There’s a Christmas “Rocky Mountain High” just up the highway. A John Denver Holiday Concert completes its run this weekend at Lone Tree Arts Center south of Denver. There are traditional Christmas carols and some of John Denver’s special hits played by musicians including Dan Wheetman, who’s a pickin’ and fiddlin’ and was a member of John Denver’s band. Nashville singer Gail Bliss is featured. Shows 8 p.m. Friday, 1:30 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets $33-55 at lonetreeartscenter.org, 720-509-1000. SATURDAY

– Come skate with the champions outdoors, even if it’s your first time on the ice. Theme day Saturday at Skate in the Park in Acacia Park downtown is SkateFest presented by U.S. Figure Skating. And it’s free! Team USA members will be on hand to skate and help skaters of all ages in group lessons based on skills. Ice time is 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. downtowncs.com

– Gaze at the sun, and quite safely so, during a Winter Solstice Solar Viewing Party from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. If skies are cloud-free there’s a clear sun shot with special equipment supplied by the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society. Give a quick call to check viewing conditions, 719-748-3253. – Not your everyday invitation: have breakfast with the wolves. A holiday Winter Wonderland With The Wolves invites families to come out from 9 to 10 a.m. Sunday for breakfast burritos, a wolf tour and howling with the wolves at Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center, 4729 Twin Rocks Road, Divide. Admission $30 for adults, kids 12 and under free (limited to two children per reservation), wolfeducation.org

– Grab your binoculars and your birding books. Time to count those woodpeckers, doves, blackbirds, Canada geese and other feathered friends for the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count. You’ll be recording species and numbers of birds spotted in Bear Creek Regional Park and there’s no experience necessary. All ages welcome. – Here’s a rare opportunity to visit a private local treasure, the El Paso Club. Located at Platte and Tejon, it’s a historic brick building that will be open for an Empty Stocking Fund benefit party, Holidays for Hope, at 7 p.m. Saturday. SUNDAY

– A perfect start to Christmas week as the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and the Colorado Springs Chorale combine for a Christmas Symphony. Holiday favorites will include Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and Handel’s “Messiah” conducted by Thomas Wilson. The performance is 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pikes Peak Center, 190 S.
