Wednesday’s high school roundup: Manitou Springs boys’ outlast TCA in boys’ basketball

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Manitou Springs 54, TCA 50

At Manitou Springs: Lucas Rodholm scored 20 points and blocked a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds, and Manitou Springs blew a 15-point lead but recovered late for a nonleague win over a former Tri-Peaks League foe.

Manitou Springs (2-0) led 50-35 early in the fourth quarter before the Titans (1-4) scored 15 straight.

With less than one minute to play, Steven Jensen put the Mustangs ahead 52-50 on a press-beating layup. After the Mustangs hit one of two free throws, Rodholm came up with a block and put the game away with a free throw.

“We got a little loose with the basketball and missed a few shots,” Mustangs coach Ken Vecchio said. “We also got a little lose on defense and they hit a few shots, and all the sudden, it was a game. This was a game I was worried about after the way we played last week.”

For TCA, Jared Belcher connected for five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 17 points. Adam Selvage added 13 for the Titans.

Falcon 60, Mesa Ridge 57

At Palmer: Behind 25 points from Noah Saunders, Falcon erased an eight-point deficit with a strong third quarter, then surged ahead late to take the first-round game at the Terror Invitational.

Falcon (2-2) will meet Eaglecrest (4-0), the 2013 5A state champions, in a semifinal at 8 p.m. Friday.

Reece Warren added 10 points for Falcon, which bounced back from a home overtime loss to Pueblo Central on Monday.

Dylan Mileto had 18 points for Mesa Ridge (1-3), which built a 35-27 lead at halftime.

“We’re struggling to build on leads,” Grizzlies coach Paul Mileto said. “We also gave up a 13-point lead to CSCS (a loss on Dec. 3).”

Rampart 82, Castle View 61

At Rampart: Cal Zeb Roberson scored a game-high 26 points, including a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range, as the Rams (3-1) hit 9 of 18 3-pointers.

Also for the Rams, Brendan LaRose added 16 points and Kole Cerjan had 11.

Palmer 73, Pueblo County 47

At Palmer: Antonio Handford had the hot hand for Palmer, pouring in 23 points, and Isaiah Reese had 17 points, including five of his team’s 12 3-pointers, as the Terrors rolled in their home tournament first-round game.

Palmer (3-2) scored 30 points in the first quarter and led 40-18 at halftime.

Eaglecrest 92, Coronado 35

At Palmer: Coronado was no match for 5A state-power Eaglecrest in the opening round of the Terror Invitational.

The Raptors (4-0), a semifinalist a season ago and state champions in 2013, led 51-16 by halftime.

Jaydon Lewis led the Cougars (0-4) with nine points.

Monarch 49, Sierra 38

At Boulder: Sierra (1-3) was outscored in all four quarters as the Stallions fell to the Coyotes (3-3) at the Fairview Festival.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Cheyenne Mountain 137, Colorado Academy 50

At Cheyenne Mountain: Katie Liebscher (200-yard individual medley, 100 backstroke) and Maggie Tibbett (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke) two individual titles, and Cheyenne Mountain touched first in nine of the 11 swimming events in a dominating performance.

HOCKEY

Pine Creek 4, Air Academy 1

At Sertich Ice Center: Cameron Sykes had two assists, and four different players scored for Pine Creek as the Eagles (2-0) downed Air Academy (1-2).

The teams played a scoreless first period before Pine Creek’s Noah Cundiff scored on the power play 6:13 into the second period. Trae Miller and Dylan Greco followed to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into the third period.

Jarrett Peterson extended the lead to 4-0 before Anthony Ciolli broke up the shutout with just less than 10 minutes left.

Wyatt Kiewicz stopped 20 of 21 shots for Pine Creek.

WRESTLING

Pueblo County 51, Mesa Ridge 21

At Pueblo County: Mesa Ridge couldn’t pull off an upset over the top-ranked 4A team in the preseason On the Mat rankings, but a few Grizzlies did give a glimpse of their vast potential this season.

Sam Freeman, who finished fourth at 145 pounds at state last season, downed Chris Sandoval, the defending 126-pound state champion, by a 9-2 decision. At 182 pounds, Aaron Bito of Mesa Ridge defeated defending 170-pound state champ Dante Garcia, 7-6 in an ultimate tiebreaker.

Dominick Fini and Onyx Rowland, state qualifiers at 220 and 285 pounds, respectively, last season, also picked up wins for Mesa Ridge.

Pine Creek 66, Liberty 9

At Liberty: Pine Creek ended six matches early with pins, including one 26 seconds into the second period by Peter Isais at 160 pounds. Last season, Isais finished fourth in the state in the 145-pound weight class.

Ryan Chauvin, a sixth-place finisher at the 5A state meet last March, pinned his opponent in the first period. Other Pine Creek pins came from Clay Schwab (145), Garrett Niel (182), Kacin Nowlin (195) and Tayler Clifton (220).
