Tuesday’s prep roundup: Gabi Roehr helps Liberty upend Rampart in girls’ swimming

Highlights from Tuesday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Liberty 98, Rampart 88

At Liberty: Gabi Roehr won individual events in the 100 butterfly and 50-yard freestyle and later swam anchor on two winning relays as Liberty held on to a slim lead late to deal Rampart a rare league dual setback.

“It’s the first time we’ve beaten them since I’ve been here,” fifth-year Lancers coach Erik Richardson said. “I heard later on that it’s been six, maybe eight years since they lost one in league. Rampart should get as much credit. They helped bring us to another level. It was great competition, and with the effort we gave, I would have been thrilled with losing.”

Catriona Clarke won the 100 and 200 freestyle races for Rampart, and teammate Edenna Chen claimed titles in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

Air Academy 226, Discovery Canyon 139

At Rampart: Air Academy took first in 10 of the 11 swimming events, highlighted by Sam Steigerwald’s victories in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Manitou Springs 133, Mesa Ridge/Widefield 46

At Widefield Community Center: Manitou Springs swimmers won all but one event as Kethrys Buffa (50 free and 100 butterfly) and Samantha White (100 and 200 free) paced the Mustangs.

Palmer 104, Doherty 79

At Palmer: With a sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke, Palmer clinched its first dual win over Doherty since 2007.

Kylee Kujalowicz paced Doherty by winning the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle races.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 84, Widefield 77 (2OT)

At Widefield: Maggie Hartman scored a team-high 26 points as St. Mary’s (4-0) hit big free throws down the stretch in the second overtime to outlast Widefield.

Charisse Fairley of Widefield (1-2) led all scorers with 28 points.

“We hit 13 of our last 17 free throws, and that was the difference down the stretch,” St. Mary’s coach Mike Burkett said. “This was a great game for us. They got ahead, we came back, and I learned that we’ll fight to the very end. We had a few blowout wins early, but I’ll take a game like this. It teaches you a lot more, win or lose.”

Mesa Ridge 50, Pueblo East 46

At Pueblo East: Kylee Shook registered 21 points and 16 rebounds, and freshman Ashley Bowen added 14 points as Mesa Ridge (4-0) rallied from a six-point halftime deficit.

Valor Christian 66, Falcon 44

At Falcon: Falcon (2-1) stood toe-to-toe with the defending 4A state champions, trailing by only two at halftime before the Eagles took charge in the second half.

Valor outscored Falcon 27-3 in the third quarter.

Pine Creek 48, Pueblo South 28

At Pueblo South: Pine Creek (1-0) won the first game of the new Kenny VanRyn era as the Eagles shut down the Colts.

“I think the kids have had to adjust to a new style of coaching and practices, and in the last week, they’ve started to really push each other and get a little tougher minded,” VanRyn said. “We left some points on the table, but I was really impressed with allowing only 28 points.”

Pueblo South’s leading scorer, Hannah Kochen, had seven.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Lewis-Palmer 55, Pueblo East 35

At Pueblo East: Behind a suffocating defense, Lewis-Palmer (4-1) won its third straight game.

The Rangers built a 30-14 lead at halftime and limited the Eagles (2-2) to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters.

Palmer 61, Douglas County 52

At Palmer: Will Ross led all scorers with 18 points, and Antonio Handford added 16 as Palmer used a 27-13 run in the fourth quarter to help Palmer (2-2) win its second straight after an 0-2 start.

Douglas County led 31-27 at halftime and had a five-point edge entering the fourth quarter.

Vista Ridge 61, Harrison 50

At Harrison: Hunter Maldonado led three scorers in double figures with 19 points as Vista Ridge jumped out to an early 11-point lead and never looked back in beating Harrison (2-1).
