Pine Creek’s JoJo Domann named Colorado’s Gatorade football player of the year

Early Thursday morning, JoJo Domann’s high school counselor said several people needed to talk to him, including the principal.

Domann’s first thought was that he was in some sort of trouble.

Quite the opposite.

Domann was named the Gatorade Colorado Football Player of the Year.

“I was in shock,” said Domann, who helped the Eagles (12-1) get to the Class 4A semifinals last week and was part of the Eagles’ back-to-back state championships in 2013 and 2014.

Domann set a goal in the spring of winning the award. His season numbers spoke for themselves, as did his grades and letters of recommendation sent in for the award. He caught 33 passes for 674 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed 36 times for 402 yards and 11 TDs this season. On defense, Domann had 34 tackles, including 4.5 for a loss, and two interceptions. As a kicker, he averaged 42.9 yards per punt and connected on 34-of-37 extra points and 3-of-6 field goals with a long of 43 yards.

He suffered a torn labrum in Saturday’s semifinals loss on the fourth play of the game. He will undergo surgery for the injury Wednesday.

“I couldn’t have done it without the coaches and the team as a whole and the senior class I’ve been working with the last four years,” Domann said. “It’s definitely a program achievement, not just mine.”

Domann is the first Pikes Peak region winner since Doherty’s Lamarr Houston won it in 2006. Houston plays for the Chicago Bears.

Other past winners include Christian McCaffrey (Valor Christian, now at Stanford), LenDale White (Chatfield, Southern California, Tennessee Titans 2006-09) and Ryan Miller (Columbine, Colorado, Dallas Cowboys).
