AROUND TOWN: AAUW Authors’ Day covered war, history and food

It’s a scholarship fundraiser with an enthusiastic audience and it’s all about books.

The annual Colorado Springs Branch AAUW Authors’ Day offers an opportunity to hear from and meet authors, bid at a silent auction and share lunch.

An eclectic group of writers was invited to the Nov. 14 event. Stephen Coonts, a regular on the New York Times best-seller list, has 10 novels in the Jake Grafton military series, starships and aliens in “Saucer: Savage Planet,” and his first novel, “Flight of the Intruder,” was made into a movie. He was kept busy autographing books.

Gordon Anderson photographed and completed “Historic Homes of Colorado Springs and Vicinity,” which was researched and written by his mother, Helen McIntire Anderson.

Barbara Samuel O’Neal was all about food and happiness, women’s fiction and historical fiction.

Mary Ciletti of Hooked on Books helped out with the book-sales specifics, with proceeds going to the scholarship funds at PPCC and UCCS.

The next AAUW Colorado Springs project is co-sponsorship of a community dialogue Jan. 9 at Library 21c on “The Raising of America” PBS documentary series on giving all young children a good start in life. (coloradosprings-co.aauw.net).
