Reggae rock band Through the Roots stops at Black Sheep
7 p.m. Saturday, The Black Sheep, 2106 E. Platte Ave., $10-$12; 227-7625, ticketweb.com
A love of positivity brought the band members of Through the Roots together.
The five guys from San Diego spread the upbeat gospel through their blend of California reggae and rock music.
They’ll perform Saturday with the band Maoli at The Black Sheep.
“I was raised on Bob Marley,” says singer Evan Hawkins. “All of our parents were super positive people and that’s what all of us have in common – love and humanity and trying to make the world a better place.”
The guys got together in 2008 and eventually made it out on tour in 2010 with some of the big headliners in the reggae and rock genre. Their first full-length album, “Take You There,” was released in 2013 and debuted at No. 3 on the iTunes reggae chart and No. 5 on the Billboard reggae chart.
Their music is grounded in the reggae from Jamaica and the islands, Hawkins said.
“With everything going on in the world, I think people will be attracted to the more positive things in life. I like to think there are more positive people in the world than negative.”
