Air Force clinches spot in Mountain West football championship game
Air Force claimed a spot in the Mountain West championship game Dec. 5, clinching a berth when Colorado State knocked off New Mexico 28-21 on Saturday evening.
The Falcons (8-3, 6-1 Mountain West) will play San Diego State (7-3, 6-0 before Saturday’s late game) in the 5:30 p.m. championship game that will be broadcast on ESPN2, but the location of that game will not be determined until the completion of next week’s games.
The host site goes to the team ranked highest by the College Football Playoff committee. But because that poll only runs 25 deep, it is highly unlikely Air Force or San Diego State will be included. In that case, the Mountain West looks at a composite of four computer rankings — Anderson & Hester Rankings, Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Wolfe — and averages a team’s placement after taking away any FCS teams.
Entering this week’s games, San Diego State would have hosted with an average of 58.5. Air Force was at 61.25. However, a Falcons’ victory at Boise State and the Aztecs game against UNLV late Saturday will influence those numbers.
The Mountain West will receive the final rankings on the morning of Nov. 29 and an announcement will then be made. Ticket will be available through both participating schools once a site is determined.
Air Force was facing a number of tiebreaking scenarios to get into the championship game entering the week, but by beating Boise State 37-30 on Friday the Falcons made things far less complicated. With the Lobos’ loss Saturday, the Falcons clinched the outright title as they have just one conference loss and everyone else in the Mountain Division has at least three losses with one week remaining.
San Diego State clinched earlier in the day Saturday when Nevada suffered its third conference loss.
“I’m so proud of our entire football program from our players, coaches and staff on this significant accomplishment,” Air Force athletic director Jim Knowlton said in a statement. “It doesn’t happen without the support of the entire academy starting with our superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson. There is still a lot of work to do starting with a big game next week at New Mexico as we continue with the process of the season and building leaders of character at the academy.”
Air Force coach Troy Calhoun declined The Gazette’s request for an interview.
Falcons players celebrated on Twitter, saying they were “Going to the ship!”
Air Force has never won a Mountain West title, last winning a conference title as a member of the Western Athletic Conference in 1998.
