For 77 years the March of Dimes has put the focus on babies, its work aimed at helping prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant death.
That’s especially important in Colorado where 1 out of every 10 babies is born prematurely, the leading cause of newborn death nationwide, said Southern Colorado Division Director Moyra Hower.
On Oct. 15 more than 300 people were at The Broadmoor to support the March of Dimes as it continues its research and work. More than $125,000 was raised at the Signature Chefs Auction, where culinary delights by area chefs were available for the sampling.
Gala decor saluted the military and the families who are often far from extended families when moms are pregnant and babies are born, Hower said.
March of Dimes “has pampered over 250 military moms in Colorado Springs” with baby showers and Wal-Mart has donated car seats.
The Signature Chefs Ambassador Family honored was the Goulds: Bart and Rozi Gould and 3-year-old Austin and grandparents Mike and Paula Gould. Preemie Austin, who was dancing with his grandmother and walking the ballroom with his grandpa, has a baby brother, Zander, who was 2 weeks old the night of the event.
Featured chefs included Abraham Vargas, Southern Hospitality; Supansa Banker, 2 South; K.T. Trombley, Bella Panini; Will Merwin, Blue Star; Brother Luck; Matt Richardson, Cheyenne Mountain Country Club; Carlos Addarich, Cheyenne Mountain Resort; Nate Dirnberger, School District 11; Danielle Pollack, Coquette’s; Ott Mathias, Jake & Telly’s; Pete Moreno, MacKenzie’s Chop House; Greg Howard, McCabe’s Tavern; and Katie Symons, Restaurant 1858.
