Prep roundup: Liberty football team beats Air Academy in shootout

FOOTBALL

Liberty 35, Air Academy 32

At Liberty: Cole Pelt rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns while teammate Hunter Wierenga scored three times to lead the Lancers to a season-ending win over the Kadets.

The teams traded scores until Pelt broke off scoring runs of 47 and 31 yards in the space of four minutes in the second half to put Liberty ahead for good – although a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Air Academy’s Anthony Castellano helped keep it close. Wierenga had scoring runs of 9, 1 and 3 yards for Liberty, while Air Academy’s Cale Powers completed 18 of 31 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns.

Liberty finishes the season 5-5 and 2-3 in the Class 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference, while Air Academy ends 3-7 and 0-5.

Durango 48, Rampart 6

At Durango: The Rams lost their third straight game to finish the season, falling to 5-5 and 1-4 in the Class 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference. After a promising 4-0 start, the Rams lost five of their last six games.

Montrose 35, Mesa Ridge 13

At Mesa Ridge: The Grizzlies scored first, but then allowed 35 unanswered points in a season-ending loss to finish 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the Class 4A Foothills League. The Grizzlies lost three of their last four games – the lone victory came over winless Sand Creek – by a combined 123-26.

Widefield 36, Sand Creek 33

At Sand Creek: The Gladiators held off a furious Scopion rally in the final minutes to survive a season-ending battle between two previously winless teams in the Class 4A Foothills League.

Pueblo West 28, Cheyenne Mountain 7

At Pueblo West: The Indians managed but a single touchdown to finish their season 2-8 and 1-4 in the Class 4A Southern League. Pueblo West improved to 5-5 and 3-2.

Woodland Park 15, Mitchell 12

At Woodland Park: In a battle to avoid last place in the Class 3A Southern League, the Panthers scored the only points of the fourth quarter to rally for their first league win of the season.

Ke’Shawn Stover ran for 220 of Mitchell’s 328 rushing yards, but the Maurauders couldn’t manage any more than 12 points.

Harrison 36, Lewis-Palmer 14

At Harrison: Sam Garcia and Jaylon Sibley accounted for four touchdowns as the Panthers scored the final 36 points of the game to wrap up third place in the Class 3A Southern League and possibly a spot in the state tournament.

Nine players combined to rush for 171 yards for Harrison, which improved to 7-3 and 3-2 in the league – the same record as the Rangers.

The field and pairings for the state tournament will be released Sunday.

Pueblo East 62, Sierra 8

At Pueblo East: The Stallions lost their seventh straight game to finish the season, but at least scored more than they had in their previous four losses combined. Sierra ended the year at the bottom of the Class 3A South Central League standings at 1-9 and 0-4 in league play, while Pueblo East won the league at 9-1 and 4-0.

BOYS’ SOCCER

At Denver: Fountain Valley scored a 1-0 victory over KIPP Denver Collegiate at the All City Stadium to advance to the Class 3A state semifinals. The 14-2-2 Danes will play 12-5-1 Coal Ridge on Wednesday, with the winner advancing to the state title game Nov. 14.

GYMNASTICS

At Thornton: Cañon City’s Katarina Christian finished 11th on the floor exercise at the Class 4A state championships. Christian scored 8.625 for her performance; Lindsey Chohon of title-winning Niwot won the event with a 9.425.

VOLLEYBALL

St. Mary’s is headed to the Class 3A state tournament, after a rally to win the Region 11 tournament. The Pirates lost the first two games of the best-of-five region title match against Faith Christian, but then stormed back on their home floor to win three straight and punch their ticket to state after previously beating Grand Valley 3-1. The 18-7 Pirates will learn their seeding and opponents for the state tournament Monday.

The Vanguard School failed to advance out of their Class 3A regional bracket.

Kiowa defeated both Denver Christian and Byers 3-1 in the Class 2A Region D tournament to advance to state. The Indians will learn their seeding and opponents for state Monday.
