The Gazette’s Pikes Peak area prep rankings
This week’s Gazette Preps high school sports rankings
Football
Breakdown: The Trojans wrapped up the Continental-South title emphatically, after pummeling Legend 47-21. F-FC will host ThunderRidge in the first round of the playoffs, while Doherty travels to Horizon. . All three of our ranked 4A teams have huge games this week. Palmer Ridge takes on Pine Creek in hopes of forcing a split of the Pikes Peak League crown on Thursday. Vista Ridge hosts a streaking Falcon team that has won four in a row. The two teams meet Friday, with the winner taking the Foothills League crown. Discovery Canyon reminded everyone who the top dog in the league is, defeating Lewis-Palmer handily. Now the Thunder host Canon City, with a league title on the line the week before the playoffs begin. Injuries to Lewis-Palmer could determine the fate of the rest of their season. . Not much of a rewarding seed for Hanover as the Hornets will have to travel to No. 2 Fleming in the 6-man playoffs. CSCS, not ranked here after losing to both Ellicott and Peyton, got the highest seeding from the wild-card rankings for an area team in the 1A rankings, sitting 11th. Ellicott is No. 14, and Peyton is No. 15. Makes sense, right?

Volleyball (FINAL)
Breakdown: Seriously? A three-way tie for the 5A CSML? Well, then, let’s let the postseason decide who’s the best 5A volleyball team from the region. Pine Creek received a No. 20 ranking in regional play, Coronado No. 23 and Rampart No. 25. Liberty also got in at No. 30. . No surprise, Cheyenne Mountain gets the No. 1 seed in regionals, and deservedly so. Lewis-Palmer is No. 2. Air Academy was rewarded with hosting a regional, getting the last site as the No. 12 seed. . Must mention The Classical Academy here, which won the 4A CSML, posted a 17-5 record and ended up the No. 22 seed. . Great victory by CSS over Kiowa (its second against the Indians this season) on Saturday to improve the Kodiaks’ record to 20-2 and earn them a regional hosting opportunity. Always good to see the ranking committee doing its homework putting CSCS at No. 5 and Manitou Springs at No. 8, despite the Mustangs beating CSCS and winning the league crown.
