Cheyenne Mountain, Lewis-Palmer go 1-2 as 4A volleyball regionals are announced
Since computers, not people, rank the state’s high school volleyball teams, there is very little drama or intrigue when brackets for regional tournaments are released for 3A, 4A and 5A.
But there’s still plenty of gratification that comes from seeing your school at the top of the board.
“We’re proud of the fact that we’re seeded No. 1,” said Cheyenne Mountain coach David Barkley, whose Indians went 22-1 during the regular season and host a three-team 4A regional that also includes No. 24 Durango and No. 36 Weld Central on Saturday. “We’re glad we got it, but it means that there’s that much more work ahead of us.”
Cheyenne Mountain, two-time defending champion Lewis-Palmer (No. 2) and 12th-seeded Air Academy all earned home-court advantage on Saturday, when each of the 12 champions in the three 36-team fields will advance to the state tournament in Denver on Nov. 13-14.
Overall, the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference landed five teams as Discovery Canyon (No. 20) and Palmer Ridge (No. 34) also advanced to postseason play but instead will hit the road.
“I’m proud of our league and how many good teams came from it,” Barkley said. “Not many leagues have five teams in regionals.”
The 4A Metro League got three entries as TCA (22), Mesa Ridge (27) and Woodland Park (31) made the cut.
In the 3A bracket, three schools from the Tri-Peaks League – Colorado Springs Christian School (5), Manitou Springs (8) and St. Mary’s (11) were awarded home regionals.
A staggering nine teams from the Tri-Peaks, nearly a third of the overall field, will come from the league that joins the Interstate 25 corridor with the Eastern Plains and San Luis and Arkansas River valleys.
“Hopefully, that’s a strong statement that volleyball in this area continues to grow and improve,” third-year CSCS coach Lori Currier said. “It always seems like the Denver-area schools have the edge. It would be nice if we made a statement from this area this year.”
Class 5A is represented by four of its members from the Colorado Springs Metro League, although none will enjoy playing on its home court.
Pine Creek (No. 20), Coronado (23), Rampart (25) and Liberty (30) all will venture from home for Saturday’s play.
In 2A, Colorado Springs School, which won its district title last weekend, earned the right to host a three-team regional that also features Limon and Simla.
