Saturday’s prep roundup: Cheyenne Mountain wins its volleyball tourney

Highlights from action from around the Pikes Peak region on Saturday:

VOLLEYBALL

Cheyenne Mountain 3, Chaparral 0

At Cheyenne Mountain Tournament: The Indians (20-1) ended the regular season in winning fashion, just as they have in all but one match this season. The host team came out on top in the Cheyenne Mountain Tournament, defeating Chaparral 25-15, 25-12, 25-18 in the final match.

“They played so well,” said Cheyenne Mountain coach David Barkley. “(Chaparral) is a very high-ranked 5A team. We were just in the zone. We did almost everything asked, just as we trained to do; they passed well and the setter (Holly Huffman) set fabulously.”

Barkley said it was his team’s ability to be unpredictable that led to the win. Earlier, the Indians defeated Longmont, but lost one game in the match before earning the victory.

Ellie Gubser led the team with 18 kills against Longmont, followed by Elizabeth Wayne with 16 and Bethany Cullity with 13. Cullity also had six service aces in the match and 10 digs.
