Week 9 takeaways: It’s how you finish, not how you start

Sports loves a good comeback story, right?

After Week 9 of the 2015 prep football season, several schools around the Pikes Peak region have done their part to change the script from terribly wrong to righting the ship in a big way.

Remember Manitou Springs and Falcon? They both started 0-5. See ya next year, right?

Wait a minute. Manitou Springs is headed to the 2A playoffs after rebounding to finish second in the Tri-Peaks League, capped by a 53-0 win against St. Mary’s on Friday. Falcon, suddenly on a four-game winning streak in league play, will play district rival Vista Ridge for the 4A Foothills League title next Friday.

Want more?

Colorado Springs Christian School, down in the dumps at 2-3 and with then-No. 3-ranked Limon lurking, jumped all over the Badgers in Week 6. All that did was start a four-game run. In a few days, we’ll know who the 6-3 Lions, runner-up in the 1A South Central, will play in the first round of the playoffs. There probably isn’t a team out there, division champ or not, that wants to play CSCS right now.

Fountain-Fort Carson lost its first two games. On Friday, the Trojans put the finishing touches on a league crown at 7-2 and will host a 5A first-round playoff game next week.

Of course, we’ve seen the well-documented story of Discovery Canyon. The Thunder entered the season off a school-best 12-1 mark and berth in the 3A state semifinals. But they’d have to replace all 11 starters on offense and most of the defense.

It showed early with an 0-4 start, made more stinging by several close, last-second defeats

But in Week 5, Discovery Canyon beat 4A Rampart and have rolled since. The Thunder’s 40-7 win at Lewis-Palmer put them in the driver’s seat to win the Southern League and an automatic berth.

Except next week, Discovery Canyon plays host to another squad that stumbled early.

Canon City fell to an 0-4 start, then went to 1-5 after giving up nine TDs to Lewis-Palmer in Week 6

The Tigers haven’t lost since. On Nov. 7 (Saturday) at District 20 Stadium, the Tigers can keep Discovery Canyon from winning the league title outright.

How’s that for a story? One, or both, of these schools will claim a league title. And both started 0-4.

And that’s why you keep on going.
