A man who shot at police in 2014 was sentenced Friday to 22 years in prison, court records show.

Chester Dean III, 62, pleaded guilty June 24 to attempted murder with extreme indifference. In May 2014, the former American Legion chaplain began shooting at witnesses when Officer Allison Detwiler walked toward Dean’s house on a call that he was suicidal. Detwiler shot back and wounded Dean, for which she was later awarded the highest honor the Colorado Springs Police Department bestows upon its officers.

Sixteen other charges against Dean were dismissed by the District Attorney, court records show. They include counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer after deliberation, violent crime involving a weapon, attempted first-degree assault with a deadly weapon and threatening a peace officer with a weapon.
