Highlights from Tuesday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Pine Creek 2, Palmer 1

At District 20 Stadium: Pine Creek (8-4-3, 6-0 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) had to rally against Palmer (4-10, 0-5) to clinch the league title outright on Tuesday.

Jacob Johnson tied the game at 1 early in the second half. And Mitch Cutts scored the game-winner in the 55th minute as the Pikes Peak region Class 5A No. 1 Eagles wrapped up their fourth consecutive league title.

“We tell the guys it’s not how you start,” Pine Creek coach Ben Corley said, “it’s how you finish.”

Same held true for the 2015 season in general.

The Eagles had only two wins through their first eight games of the year. Yet they went undefeated in league play, winning their last five games of the season – which included a 2-1 overtime win over previously undefeated Rampart 10 days ago.

Now, Corley hopes his team can sustain its good play heading into the Class 5A state playoffs next week.

“We see it as an opportunity not pressure,” he said.

The Eagles have reached the quarterfinals at least the last three seasons.

Fountain Valley 3, The Vanguard School 2

At Vanguard: Ha Dao scored two goals and Frank Oliveri-Barton added the game-winner as 3A No. 1 Fountain Valley (10-2-2) continues to make its case for a high seed in the Class 3A state playoffs.

Sam Bermingham had two assists for the Danes, who wrapped up the 3A Region 1 crown last week.

No. 2 Vanguard (10-3) lost its second straight.

Colorado Springs Christian School 4, St. Mary’s 0

At CSCS: Daniel Berntsson had two goals and Lookens Smith had a goal and an assist as CSCS (11-3-1) held its fourth consecutive opponent scoreless.

Tanner McKay also scored for the 3A No. 3 Lions, who outscored foes 22-0 in their last four games of the season.

St. Mary’s (3-10-1), the 2014 3A Region 1 champ, has recorded just one win in its last six games.

Rampart 2, Coronado 0

At Coronado: Mario Mandel and Cody Roth both scored as 5A No. 2 Rampart (12-1-1, 4-1 5A CSML) won its fourth straight.

Eddi Acree had five saves against Coronado, which was held scoreless for the first time this season.

The Rams, in the meantime, have yet to be shut out this season, and Tuesday’s two-goal outing was their 11th game of the season in which they scored multiple goals.

They’re 1-1-1 this season when they score only one goal in a game.

Doherty 4, Liberty 2

At Sand Creek Stadium: Alen Acosta scored three goals and had an assist as Doherty bounced back from its 2-0 loss to Pine Creek on Saturday.

Toby Gums added a goal and an assist in the win.

Liberty (4-10, 2-3) finished the season 2-5 on the road.

Canon City 6, Sierra 0

At Canon City: Tanner Hunt and Billy Stopka each had two goals and an assist as Canon City (7-6-1, 4-3 4A CSML) won its second game in the CSML tournament.

The Tigers beat Woodland Park in their first game of the tournament, and next they’ll face Widefield on Thursday.

Sierra (5-9, 1-6) has lost five of its last six games.

TCA 4, Mitchell 1

At TCA: Titus Grant has scored at least one goal in all 14 games this season.

Tuesday, he scored twice – his 21st and 22nd of the year – as TCA (13-1, 7-0 4A CSML) won its 12th straight.

Jaden Borja and Anders Carlson also scored in the win.

Mitchell (5-8-1, 4-2-1) has gone 0-3-1 in its last four games.

Harrison 3, Mesa Ridge 0

At Harrison:  Christian Garcia, Bryan Zamora and Francisco Delgado Silva each had goals as Harrison (11-3, 5-2 4A CSML) won its sixth game in a row.

Meanwhile, Mesa Ridge (7-6-1, 4-2-1) has been shut out for the last 160 minutes.

Lewis-Palmer 5, Discovery Canyon 2

At Discovery Canyon: Five different players scored for Lewis-Palmer on Tuesday.

Dylan Turner and Federico Bianchi led the way, notching a goal and assist each.

The Rangers finished third in the PPAC behind Cheyenne Mountain and Air Academy.

Discovery Canyon (7-7-1, 2-4-1) lost its third straight.

Palmer Ridge 4, Vista Ridge 0

At Don Breese: Palmer Ridge (8-7, 4-3 4A PPAC) finished fourth in league.

Griffin Lloyd had two goals and Garrett Obermeyer had two assists in the win.

Vista Ridge (8-6-1, 2-4-1) had only one win in its last five games of the season.

VOLLEYBALL

Lewis-Palmer 3, Discovery Canyon 0

At Lewis-Palmer: Lewis-Palmer (19-2, 6-0 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) stayed untouched in league play, beating Discovery Canyon (14-4, 3-3) 25-18, 25-17, 25-17.

Lydia Bartalo had 11 kills and nine digs in the win. Michaela Putnicki had 10 kills, and Nicole Mack added six kills and four aces.

While the Rangers haven’t lost a set in league all year, L-P coach Susan Odenbaugh thinks her team is only now starting to play their best.

“I think we passed better than we have all season,” she said. “And I think we played exceptional defense tonight.”

It’s good timing too. Class 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer and No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain will fight for the league crown Thursday.

The Rangers have won it three years in a row, dating back to the PPAC’s inaugural year in 2012.

“We need to play defense really well,” Odenbaugh said. “They are taller than us so we’ll have to focus on that.”

Cheyenne Mountain 3, Falcon 0

At Falcon: No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain (15-1, 6-0 4A PPAC) beat Falcon (7-9, 1-5) 25-12, 25-13, 25-10.

Bethany Cullity had 11 kills and 10 digs for the Indians, who have dropped only one set in league play.

They’ll try to end Lewis-Palmer’s PPAC dominance on Thursday.

Coronado 3, Liberty 2

At Liberty: Madison Brown and Mara Abernethy had 13 kills apiece, and Coronado stayed in contention for a league title as it rallied to beat Liberty 16-25, 18-25, 25-14, 25-19, 18-16.

The 5A No. 2 Cougars (12-4, 4-0 5A CSML) face No. 1 Pine Creek (9-7, 4-0) on Thursday. The winner will likely win the league crown.

Jenna McGuire had 17 kills and 23 digs for the Lancers (10-7, 1-3).

Rampart 3, Doherty 0

At Rampart: Rampart (9-8, 3-1 5A CSML) is a half game back of the league lead after it beat Doherty 25-9, 25-23, 25-14.

Taylor Sibert had 13 kills and Kaitlin Patton had four kills and five aces in the win.

Gina Boungiorno had seven kills for Doherty (4-12, 1-4), which lost its third straight.

Woodland Park 3, Mitchell 0

At Mitchell: Taylor Alvarez had five of her team’s 14 aces as Woodland Park beat Mitchell 25-11, 25-14, 25-12.

Jenny Lau and Kayla Woods each added three aces of their own for the Panthers (14-6, 8-3), who have won three straight.

The Marauders (0-16, 0-11) haven’t won a match this season.

Air Academy 3, Vista Ridge 1

At Air Academy: Ashley Pagan had 21 kills and 15 digs as Air Academy beat Vista Ridge 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 25-22.

Lauren Petty added 10 kills and Sierra Ball had 21 of the team’s 64 digs for the 4A No. 1 Kadets (9-9, 4-2 PPAC), who won for the third time in their last four matches.

Air Academy’s only two league losses came to No. 1 Lewis-Palmer and No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain.

Vista Ridge (10-12, 1-5) has lost five of its last six matches.

TCA 3, Mesa Ridge 1

At Mesa Ridge: Emma Porter had 20 kills and nine digs as TCA (14-4, 11-0 4A CSML) beat Mesa Ridge 25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 27-25.

Raegan Bervig had 12 kills and Chloe Weeks added 22 digs and three aces in the win.

Mesa Ridge (13-3, 9-2) had its six-game winning streak snapped.

VOLLEYBALL

Colorado Springs Christian School 3, Buena Vista 0

At CSCS: Abby Skrastins had 13 kills and 18 digs as Pikes Peak region No. 3 CSCS (13-2 overall, 9-1 3A Tri-Peaks) won its third match in a row.

Bailey Scott added seven kills and 11 digs in the win.

St. Mary’s 3, The Vanguard School 0

At Vanguard: Jackie Delfeld had 10 kills and 10 digs as St. Mary’s (11-5 overall, 7-2 3A Tri Peaks) beat Vanguard 25-17, 25-19, 25-19.

Brighid Heaney added eight kills and three aces in the win.

Kaylee Frear had 13 kills and Janine Coderre added another seven for the Coursers (11-9, 5-5).
