A second Colorado College hockey player has retired from playing competitive hockey in a span of only a few months after sophomore forward Jordan Berger announced his decision.

“It is tough saying goodbye to something you love so much, but in the end health is more important (than) a game,” Berger said on his Facebook page late Monday. “I can’t even begin to explain how grateful I am for everything I’ve (learned) from hockey and the amazing relationships and experiences I’ve made. Thank you to my parents (Jeff and Brenda) for all that they’ve done to help me pursue my dream as a hockey player as well as everyone else who has supported me along my journey.”

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound forward from Nampa, Idaho suffered an apparent concussion in practice late last season and has not been medically cleared to practice with the Tigers since. Colorado College (0-4) hosts No. 4 Boston College (2-1) this weekend.

He recorded two assists in 10 games his freshman year, which was cut short by an earlier upper-body injury.

“It’s very sad to see a young man’s career come to an end but you have to think about life after hockey,” Tigers coach Mike Haviland said. “He has a bright future ahead of him.”

This offseason, senior Jared Hanson retired over health concerns for the same reason.Berger, 19, is the second Tigers sophomore to leave the program in as many days after sophomore defenseman Garrett Cecere told the coaches Monday morning that he was heading back to junior hockey. Cecere, who averaged 20 minutes a game last season and through the first four games this year, is reportedly looking for a different opportunity in juniors.

Berger is the sixth player lost to injury or early departure over the past six months. Junior defenseman Jaccob Slavin left for the American Hockey League while sophomore goalie Chase Perry went back to junior hockey with the British Columbia Hockey League’s Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild.

Freshman forward Westin Michaud suffered a season-ending right ACL injury before the season began.

There are now 28 players on the CC roster, including 14 freshmen and two sophomores; defensemen Teemu Kivihalme and Duggie Lagrone.
