Here’s a look at some of the top storylines from the past weekend of high school football in the Pikes Peak region:

Are kickoffs too dangerous in high school?

Cheyenne Mountain freshman Kobe Lewis was put on a stretcher and left in an ambulance during the third quarter of the Indians’ 49-6 loss at Palmer on Friday.

Lewis was returning a kickoff when he was sandwiched by two defenders, one hitting him low, the other pulling him down with his shoulder pads from behind. His neck whipped back and his head slammed onto the ground.

On Sunday, Cheyenne Mountain coach Willie Roberts said Lewis had sustained a concussion and bruised ribs.

“We’re thankful it wasn’t worse,” Roberts said.

This wasn’t the first instance this season where a player from the area has left in an ambulance after suffering a gruesome-looking injury on the kickoff. Doherty sophomore Josh Secrist suffered a dislocated elbow when he went down awkwardly on a kickoff return against Palmer in September.

“Kickoffs can be dangerous with kids running full speed at each other,” Roberts said. “(Lewis’ injury) could’ve happened on any play, though. I don’t think it was because of a kick return.”

Palmer Ridge shows character in loss

Isaiah Sanders threw for three touchdowns and ran for another two scores – all in the second half – but Palmer Ridge (5-2 overall, 1-1 4A Pikes Peak) couldn’t climb out of a big hole in its 48-35 loss at Durango on Friday.

Terrence Trujillo threw two touchdowns and ran for another in the first half to give the Demons a 21-0 lead. Durango (7-0, 2-0) then capitalized off a turnover on the opening kickoff of the second half to go up 28-0.

After Sanders’ fifth TD of the half, the Bears failed to recover an onside kick in the final minutes.

“The way we fought back speaks a lot about this team,” Palmer Ridge coach Tom Pulford said. “It shows great character.”

Manitou Springs back from the dead

The Mustangs averaged around four turnovers on their way to five consecutive losses to open the 2015 season.

Two weeks later, they’re competing for a league title.

“That’s what happens when you hold the ball a little better and get some turnovers of your own,” Manitou Springs coach Monte Gutowski said.

Cole Sienknecht threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns, and Chase Norman ran for 138 yards and a score as the Mustangs (2-5 overall, 2-1 2A Tri-Peaks) beat visiting Lamar 41-13 on Friday.

Manitou Springs is just a game back of La Junta (7-0, 3-0) in the league standings with two games remaining.

“All we can control now is the things we’re doing,” Gutowski said.

Domann back on the field

JoJo Domann, who’d been dealing with a high-ankle sprain for the past two weeks, returned to the field in partial capacity in Pine Creek’s 47-13 win over Liberty on Thursday.

The usual two-way player was limited to offensive duties, and he amassed 122 yards of total offense and scored, on five total touches.

“I mostly lined up on the right side,” Domann said. “That way when I cut I was planting my right foot not left.”

Domann was surprised he even played at all. He hadn’t practiced all week, he said, and on Wednesday he could barely run.

“I just didn’t feel very good,” Domann said. “It wasn’t a good representation of how hard I’d been working to get back.”

On Thursday, though, Domann woke up feeling better. He ran for Eagles coach Todd Miller before the game and was cleared to go about four hours before kickoff.

Domann expects to play offense and defense when Pine Creek (7-0, 2-0) hosts Durango on Saturday.

“I’ll definitely practice all this week and be ready to go,” he said.
