Plenty of fall activities at Reynolds Ranch Harvest Festival

10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Western Museum of Mining and Industry, 225 North Gate Blvd., $5 ages 5 and older; 488-0880, wmmi.org.

Apple cider, a pumpkin patch and a hay-bale maze.

It’s definitely fall. The Western Museum of Mining and Industry will celebrate the season with the Reynolds Ranch Harvest Festival. It’s Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s a very family-friendly and affordable day,” says Casey Pearce, programming and marketing coordinator at WMMI. “You can have a full day of fall fun with pumpkins and animals and lots of stuff for kids and grown-ups to do.”

About 2,000 people attended last year’s festival. Activities include hayrides, crafts, blacksmith shop demonstrations, farmers market, gold panning, running steam engines and animals, including birds, snakes and donkeys.

The museum will also fire up its functioning apple cider press and make cider from the five apple trees that remain in the property’s original 1890s orchard.

Sara and Joseph Reynolds moved from Pennsylvania to the property now known as Reynolds Ranch in the 1890s. They had dairy cows and a sawmill on more than 700 acres, and provided milk, cream and timber for Colorado Springs through 1910, when the Springs expanded due to increased activity in Cripple Creek.

In the 1950s the Air Force bought most of the land and turned it into the U.S. Air Force Academy. Due to its private ownership and location on the eastern side of I-25, Reynolds Ranch was left alone.

It became a museum and nonprofit organization in the 1980s.
