Wednesday’s prep roundup: Falcon keeps pace in softball with win over Cheyenne Mountain

Highlights from Wednesday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

SOFTBALL

Falcon 16, Cheyenne Mountain 6 (6 innings)

At Falcon: Lexi Manyik and Sierra Leon each had four hits to pace a 17-hit attack, leading Falcon to a run-rule-shortened victory to remain unbeaten in league play.

Maddie Mast added three hits for Falcon (6-8, 2-0 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference), which this week made its debut in the area rankings at No. 3.

Michelle Vereline and Kendra Manzanares-Tafoya had two hits apiece for Cheyenne Mountain (5-3, 1-2), which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

Rampart 7, Coronado 1

At Rampart: Alyssa McDowell scattered six hits in a complete-game victory, and Rampart (6-6, 2-3 5A CSML) scored all seven of its runs in the first three innings to claim a league victory.

Riley Afshari went 2 for 3 and knocked in her only team’s run for Coronado (5-6, 2-5).

The teams meet again Thursday at Holmes Middle School after their previously scheduled game was rained out.

Lewis-Palmer 13, Palmer Ridge 3, 6 innings

At Lewis-Palmer: After having scored just one run in its first two league games, Lewis-Palmer (6-9, 1-2 PPAC) routed Monument rival Palmer Ridge (2-12, 0-4).

SOCCER

Pine Creek 2, Bear Creek 2 (OT)

At D20 Stadium: Andrew Turk scored a goal and added an assist, and Jon Schroeder scored as well for Pine Creek (2-3-3), which was unable to hold a second-half lead.

“It was more like a loss than a tie,” Eagles coach Ben Corley said. “We controlled the game, but they hit a few crazy balls, and their goalkeeper had saves on five one-on-one breakaways. I give them credit, though.”

Doherty 3, Cheyenne Mountain 1

At Doherty: Doherty broke a four-game losing streak to stun 4A No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain (5-2).

At press time, stats were not available.
