Hank Cramer concert will benefit Black Forest Together recovery efforts

More than two years after the Black Forest Fire raged through the community north of Colorado Springs, Black Forest Together continues to clear dead, burned out trees from scorched land and do flood mitigation on the still unstable landscape.

All that work costs money. And the nonprofit organization will hold its “first official fundraiser,” spokeswoman Melissa Chambless said, when folk music artist Hank Cramer performs on Saturday.

“There is still great need in Black Forest,” Chambless said. “There is a lot of recovery work still going on and will be going on for a long time.”

The Black Forest fire ignited June 11, 2013, burning more than 14,000 acres, destroying more than 500 homes and killing two people. The scorched landscape in northern El Paso County caused flash floods that have left Black Forest seeking help from Black Forest Together, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the county and other outlets. The fire ranks fourth on the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Associations list of “most costly catastrophes in the Rocky Mountain region,” piling up more than $420 million in insurance costs.

Most of the money that has funded Black Forest Together to date has come from grants and other nonprofits. Chambless said money from those sources still trickles in, just not as quickly. She said, “As we grow and as the needs grow, there are ongoing funding needs.”

Saturday’s benefit concert will be held at 7 p.m. at the Black Forest Community Club, 12530 Black Forest Road. Admission is by donation, $10 per adult and $5 per child. Refreshments, music CDs, T-shirts and fire recovery brochures will also be available at the show.

Chambless said all of the money from the concert will go to fund the organization. She said specific projects for the money have not yet been identified.

The proceeds will pay for ongoing volunteer efforts, maintenance on equipment and the organizations wood chipper or for purchasing new tools and supplies.
