Klee blog: After Saturday results, Showdown bigger for CU than CSU
CHRISTIAN MURDOCK, THE GAZETTE
FORT COLLINS — Mike Bobo won’t go quietly, nor does he appreciate a quiet crowd.
Right after Colorado State sacked the Minnesota quarterback and Hughes Stadium showed signs of a heartbeat, Bobo implored the audience to stand on its feet and make some noise. That was after Bobo spent most of three quarters in the ears of the Big Ten crew that officiated Minnesota’s 23-20 overtime win.
It’s a miracle if his headset still works, given how many times it was tossed to the turf. Don’t let the deliberate, chilled-out Georgia drawl fool you. Bobo coaches with fire.
Meantime, the Colorado Buffaloes are playing with fire. Oh, they won Saturday, 48-14 against Massachusetts. But their season-opening loss at Hawaii, an unforgivable offense with all the sunshine and seashells coming out of Boulder in the offseason, nudges the game Saturday at Sports Authority Field into must-win territory. CU’s hope for the nonconference season was to escape with a 4-0 record. Going 2-2 would be a big bummer.
That makes the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown far more important for the Buffs than the Rams. CSU knows it has another excellent season brewing. CU has no idea what it has.
Another loss to the little school up north will have folks in Boulder wondering if yet another coaching change is right around the corner, if Mike MacIntyre is the right guy for the job.
The Rams can sleep tight knowing Bobo was a super hire by CSU’s administration. He’ll make an excellent head coach in the SEC someday.
The Rams are 1-1. The Buffs are 1-1.
The Rocky Mountain Showdown is next, and this one means a lot more to CU than CSU.
