USA Pro Challenge cycling race has strong international flavor for first time
FORT COLLINS – The USA Pro Challenge has been predominantly red, white and blue since its inception as Americans have won all four editions of the seven-day stage race. But 2015 has featured a decidedly international flavor.
Consider Saturday, when a cyclist from Australia retained the yellow jersey as overall leader while riders from Czech Republic, Spain and Italy swept the top three spots of Stage 6.
From the start last week in Steamboat Springs, Rohan Dennis easily has been the best rider in the field. And BMC has been the best team. So after five days of dominance, Saturday’s 104-mile route was simply about staying out of trouble.
Mission accomplished. Dennis and the boys from BMC enjoyed a breezy day on the roads, quickly wiping out any threats along the way. Heading into Sunday’s final stage from Golden to Denver, the Australian owns a 44-second lead over teammate Brent Bookwalter and a 91-second advantage over Rob Britton.
“Tomorrow’s more of a sprint stage,” Dennis said. “Today was probably the last day where guys can realistically take time off us.”
There were a half-dozen riders who crossed the line more than 30 seconds in front of Dennis in Stage 6, but none of them is a factor in the overall standings.
Leading the way was Roman Kreuziger, who came to Colorado with aspirations of taking the entire race.
“We came with two goals,” Kreuziger, who rides for Tinkoff-Saxo, said. “We missed one in the beginning because BMC’s really strong and we were not really ready for the high altitude. But the other goal was to win a stage and I think today was a good day to try because I started to feel a little bit better. We had the plan to try, and I’m really happy that we won.”
The Czech Republic cyclist outsprinted Spaniard Javier Megias and Italian Leonardo Basso to win in front of a boisterous crowd lining both sides of the finishing stretch.
“It’s really important – not just for our team, but for me,” Kreuziger said. “Obviously, you don’t win every day so it’s really nice to win.”
Stage 7 features a 69-mile route from Golden to Denver.
