Air Force football Fan Day continues to grow

Several hundred fans came out Saturday morning for Fan Day, which included an inflatable slide, human hamster balls, face painting, giveaways, a beer garden and, most of all, interaction.

Members of the cheerleading and dance teams as well as the mascot, The Bird, circulated throughout the stands at Falcon Stadium to sign autographs and talk with fans. After the scrimmage, supporters lined the field and the football team made the rounds, shaking hands and thanking everyone for the support.

“I love it when the fans come out,” receiver Garrett Brown said. “I wish we did more, to be honest, just because it’s exciting. Before the scrimmage you could tell everybody was excited to go. Everybody wanted to put on a show for the fans.”

Select players and coach Troy Calhoun returned to the field after the scrimmage to sign autographs. Afterward, the team unloaded a truck of food for charity.

“It’s neat to see a pretty good turnout,” Calhoun said. “Especially with so many children.”

Oehrle’s solid day

Placekicker Drew Oehrle provided one of the day’s top moments, connecting on a 53-yard field goal in swirling winds. The boot, struck from the left hash mark, bounced off the crossbar and over.

Oehrle hit several other field goals and would seem to have a firm grip on winning the position.

“I thought this week he hit the ball pretty well throughout practice,” said Calhoun, who wouldn’t say Oehrle had solidified the spot.

At punter, Calhoun said the starter will likely be either senior Brett Dunn or sophomore Matt Moskowitz.

Scrimmage highlights

Backup quarterback Karson Roberts had an up-and-down day. He hit the tight end on a perfectly executed rollout play that went for a touchdown. But he also missed a wide-open Garrett Brown on an overthrow against the scout team and his fumbled exchange with a running back resulted in one of the day’s few turnovers in the scrimmage portion of the game. . Weston Steelhammer, who notched five of his six interceptions at Falcon Stadium last year, made another pick on a deep ball against the scout team. . Receiver Alex Ludowig made the move of the day, a tight spin that helped him into the end zone. . Sophomore linebacker Grant Ross lined up for at least one series with the first-team defense, something he hadn’t previously done through fall camp. . Tailback Benton Washington’s powerful run led to a collision in the middle of the defense that caused a helmet to go flying. . Freshman quarterback Ryan Brand made an ill-advised pass under pressure against the scout team that resulted in an interception. … The star of the offense against the scout team was sophomore running back Tim McVey, who used a midfield cutback to score on one long run and later added at least one more touchdown.
