Here’s a look at some of the top events happening in the Colorado Springs area:
FRIDAY-SUNDAY
– It’s closing weekend for the inaugural Breckenridge International Festival of Arts, the newest ski town summer arts festival. There’s music and art, dance, yoga, art exhibits with links to the area’s environment, a paint-the-trees-blue project and bicycle poster art. This weekend: Los Lobos, Ira Glass, Pandas & People, Chemistry Club and the clever Trail Mix, a delightful mixture of art, musicians, hiking and biking along some of Breck’s favorite trails – Iowa Hill, Moonstone and Illinois Creek. FRIDAY-SATURDAY
– They dub it the “sexiest date night of the summer” when Millibo Art Theatre is the site of circus, burlesque, comedy and cabaret: The Circus Of the Night. Check out the adult fun at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Aug. 28-29 as well. Millibo, inside the building with the huge, red exclamation point, is located in the Ivywild area at 1626 S. FRIDAY
– It’s an indie-pop Joywave on Friday; doors open at 7 p.m., at Rawkus, 3506 N. Academy Blvd. This basement band went on to perform at Lollapalooza and SXSW, opened for the Killers, performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and toured in Europe and the U.S. Their album is “How do You Feel Now?” Also on the bill, My Body Sings Electric and Rose Quartz. – Get ready for some smokin’ sounds from “The Serbian Scorcher” when Ana Popovic and her Fender Telecaster fire up the stage with a night of hot blues at Stargazers Theatre, 10 S. Parkside Drive. SATURDAY
– You can join VW bus fans at Bristol Brewing’s Buses at the Brewery celebration. The event starts with a cruise on the west side of the city at 10 a.m. The bus parade arrives at Bristol at 10:45 a.m. and outside party runs from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Location: 1604 S. Cascade Ave. More info here.
– First a bike ride with fun activity stations, ending with a Buffalo Gals barbecue and then a movie, “Unbranded,” tackling the problem of 50,000 mustangs being captured by the government and held in facilities, with no future until a young Texan arrives on the scene. Wheel to Reel is a Rocky Mountain Women Film Institute project. There’s a 2-, 6-, or 12-mile ride along the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail and the food and film are in the courtyard of the Fine Arts Center, 30 W. Dale St.. Register at 4 p.m. along the trail, Cache La Poudre Street and Mesa Road down the hill from the center. Dinner at 6 and movie at dusk. – He was so popular last August, country and folk singer Steve Earle’s back for another concert, with The Dukes, Saturday at Chico Basin Ranch. Also on the bill: King Cardinal and The Mastersons. The annual concerts are fundraisers for the ranch’s interactive educational programs, which are offered to more than 3,000 children each year. Gates open at Bell Park cottonwood grove at noon and camping is available. Food trucks fire up at 5 p.m. and concerts kick off at 6 p.m. Afterward the musicians and guests will jam around the campfire. Food trucks will be available Sunday for campers as well. – Happy 130th anniversary, North Cheyenne Cañon Park. And as part of the celebration, the Friends of Cheyenne Cañon and city parks folks are sponsoring a show and sale by local artists, Canvases in the Cañon, at Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center. Pottery, acrylics, watercolors and photography inspired by the cañon are displayed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; no admission but a portion of the sales proceeds benefit the park and its educational programs. – Time for all teddy bears to get their back-to-school-time physicals, just like their little humans. This is Teddy Bear Day at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The stuffed animals will get in free and their human kids from 3 to 11 will get in for just $5.25. Kids under 2 are free. During their zoo visit the stuffed animals can go to the ER Teddy Bear Clinic at the Lodge at Moose Lodge for TLC stitches, splints and other “medical” treatment by volunteers from Children’s Hospital Colorado. – Take a visit to the electric trolley cars that once traveled through downtown Colorado Springs and hear the history. Colorado Springs & Interurban Railway Open House is a special event presented by Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation members who are working to make the trolleys a reality once again. THURSDAY, AUG. 27
– Date night at the zoo for adults Thursday for Tails, Tunes & Tapas from 6 to 9:30 p.m. There’s music throughout the mountainside zoo by FlashBlack, Joe and Katie Uveges, Mass Transit, The O’C Band and Wirewood Station. Tapas by Taste of the Wild Catering and drinks available at cash stations. Tickets $25.25 in advance, $30.25 at the gate. Online ticket sales end Wednesday. www.cmzoo.org.
– The Fountain Community Theater creates its own reality show and a musical one at that: “Royal Bachelor.” Which eligible young lady will help Yokel, the king, run the realm? The theater presentation opens at 7 p.m. Thursday and is featured again Aug. 28-29 at Heritage Event Center, 737 Dale St., Fountain.
