Railway Foundation to share plans for downtown streetcar line at open house

Nonprofit News is a monthly Gazette publication featuring stories submitted by nonprofit organizations and individuals in the Pikes Peak region. Submit content and events for consideration to nonprofitnews@gazettedev.gazette.com.

The Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation has plans to construct a streetcar line from downtown Colorado Springs to the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs and is in discussions with property owners along the N. Nevada Avenue corridor to acquire the land necessary to build along its proposed route. The organization is hosting a open house to share more about its plans on from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., September 22 at its museum on Steel Drive, south of Fillmore Street and east of I-25.

The Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation is an all-volunteer organization located just north of the city yards in the 1888 Rock Island Railroad roundhouse. Its dual missions are to educate people about the history of streetcars in Colorado Springs and to restore and operate historic streetcars on City streets, for which is has a franchise. It hopes to do the latter without the use of government funding, and is seeking sponsors.

The Foundation operates a museum at its facility on Steel Drive, south of Fillmore Street and east of I-25, and owns 18 historic streetcars and two trolley buses, which it is in the process of restoring. Total assets of the foundation exceed $4 million.

Half- and full-day volunteers are needed for a number of positions, including docents, streetcar operators, a bookkeeper, a newsletter editor, and skilled volunteers for restoration efforts. Membership fees start at $35 per year. For additional information on volunteering or for museum tours, please contact The Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation at 719-475-9508 or csstreetcarfdn@aol.com.
