CLASS 5A

CSML

Coronado

Coach: Martin Cornell

Key players: Isaac Petersilie, sr.; Austin Burgess, sr.; Wes Moran, sr.; Luke Travins, jr.

What to know: The Cougars won state with this foursome in 2014, and hope to do it again with the same group. Petersilie won the 4A individual crown as a sophomore and narrowly missed a second, finishing as runner-up at Colorado Springs Country Club in October. Burgess and Moran both recorded top-15 finishes at state, and Travins looks to improve on a 37th-place finish.

Doherty

Coach: Cheri Rogers

Key players: Chadd Velasquez, sr.; Chance Velasquez, sr.; Jake Denny, sr.; Bryce Romero, sr.; Andrew Stroh, jr.

What to know: Twins Chadd and Chance Velasquez led the Spartans to the school’s first team berth in the state tournament in 2014 and have been the program’s 1-2 golfers the past three seasons. Denny, Romero and Stroh will battle for the last two spots on varsity.

Liberty

Coach: Stan Woodworth

Key players: Sean Conboy, so.; Jared Price, so.; Brandon Bervig, fr.; Lucas Howell, fr.; Tyler Barcelon, fr.; Austin Shelton, fr.

What to know: The Lancers are young and primed for the future with a team comprised of a few sophomore returning letter-winners and several talented freshmen who should make an impact right away. Bervig, a cousin of TCA quarterback Adam Bervig, is projected to take Liberty’s No. 1 spot, followed by fellow rookie Howell. Barcelon is another newcomer who will contribute to the varsity squad. Conboy returns after a solid freshman season and brings his experience into the mix.

Palmer

Coach: Steve Vargas

Key players: Arik Roberts, jr.; Logan Murphy, sr.; Carter Cliatt, jr.

What to know: Vargas has his top three golfers back from last season – led by state qualifier Roberts – that gives the Terrors a good deal of depth and experience. The final varsity spot will be won by one of last season’s junior varsity players.

Rampart

Coach: Scott Blatnick

Key players: DJ Manson, sr.

What to know: Manson is the lone returning letter-winner from last season’s varsity squad and lost in a playoff to determine the last state-qualifying berth. Blatnick has his team focusing on the short game and being competitive despite a lack of experience.

CLASS 4A

CSML

The Classical Academy

Coach: Bob Gravelle

Key players: Bobby Ball, jr.; Tanner Harris, sr.; Luke Ciolli, so.; Neil Baker, so.

What to know: The Titans have big hopes for the 2015 season with all four letter-winners returning. Ball qualified for the state tournament a season ago, while Harris barely missed. Gravelle, entering his fifth season, thinks it’s realistically possible that his team can finish second in the league behind favorite Mesa Ridge. Last year’s squad finished fourth.

Mesa Ridge

Coach: James Huerena

Key players: Braden Bentley, sr.; Logan Gorman, sr.

What to know: The Grizzlies have one of the top 1-2 tandems in the area in Bentley, a three-time state qualifier and two-time individual league champ, and two-time state qualifier Gorman. Bentley was the area’s top individual finisher at last season’s 4A state tournament, placing fourth, while Gorman finished 26th. Questions, however, remain regarding inexperience in the other two spots.

Mitchell

Coach: Todd Laxson

Key players: Kyle Ludvik, so.; Chris Mallard, so.; Turner Dreiling, jr.

What to know: The Marauders are young, but Laxson likes the experience in his returning trio. Laxson is looking for improvement as a team and possibly a top-10 individual finish in the league.

Widefield

Coach: Chris Morrell/Jim Mason

Key players: Cameron Skalla, jr.; Jared Hutchison, jr.

What to know: A young and inexperienced team will be the foundation for this year’s edition of the Gladiators. Widefield will lead on juniors Skalla and Hutchison.

Woodland Park

Coach: Brian Gustafson

Key players: Sam Levy, jr.; Shane Purkey, so.; Eric Lays, jr.; Jace Cisneros, so.

What to know: Levy and Lays will lead the squad after gaining experience their first two seasons, while sophomores Purkey and Cisneros committed to improving their games in the offseason.

PPAC

Air Academy

Coach: Wayne Marshall

Key players: Isaiah Amparan, sr.

What to know: Marshall lost two state qualifiers to graduation and will turn to Amparan to lead a very inexperienced team. At press time, Marshall didn’t provide candidates to compete alongside Amparan on the Kadets’ squad, but knows he has talent that he hopes can improve quickly.

Cheyenne Mountain

Coach: John Carricato

Key players: Aiden Detlof, jr.; Charlie DeVries, jr.; Everett Dwyer, jr.

What to know: Carricato, who formerly coached the Doherty girls’ golf team, takes over for longtime mentor Bill Paulson, who retired earlier this year. In 2014, Cheyenne Mountain finished third in the state team standings, but only Detlof returns from that team. Carricato’s focus early on will be to develop depth.

Discovery Canyon

Coach: Mark Liggett

Key players: Owen Pasvogel, jr.; Luke Trujillo, so.; Grant Bettis, sr.; Hayden Fry, jr.

What to know: The Thunder have high hopes. With three returning state qualifiers in Pasvogel, Trujillo and Bettis, Discovery Canyon has plenty of experience. Freshman Fry won’t be far off the top three. Watch for the squad to contend for a league title.

Falcon

Coach: Greg Morris

Key players: Ryan Welsh, so.; Robert Loughman, jr.; Cyrus Hoang, sr.; Grant Freeburger, sr.; Nate Bruntz, jr.

What to know: Morris has a younger team “with a lot of depth and consistency.” Any one of his top players could make an impact at any tournament, meaning that whoever ends up in the No. 1 spot won’t necessarily have the pressure of carding the best round.

Lewis-Palmer

Coach: Gregg Jones

Key players: Reice Henricks, jr.; Caleb Held, sr.; Greer Marshall, sr.; Austin Shelley, sr.

What to know: An experienced crew returns for the Rangers with three returning letter-winners. Henricks and Held both reached the 4A state tournament in 2014. Jones believes Marshall and Shelley have what it takes to qualify for state as well.

Vista Ridge

Coach: Chad Cosner/Devin Allen

Key players: Troy Duncan, jr.; Killian Edick, fr.; Nick Feldman, so.; Matt Fletcher, jr.

What to know: With a larger-than-normal turnout for the Wolves, co-coaches Cosner and Allen will be focusing on the basics with some inexperienced golfers. With four key players not yet seniors, the Wolves are looking to get as many rounds under their belts this season knowing they’ll have plenty coming back in 2016.

CLASS 3A

Tri-Peaks

Manitou Springs

Coach: Ken Vecchio

Key players: Lucas Culver, jr.

What to know: Culver is the lone returner from a Mustangs team that finished 10th at the 3A state tournament. He finished a respectable 40th overall at state. Three players will be making their Manitou varsity debuts when the season gets underway.

St. Mary’s

Coach: Grady Castle

Key players: Jimmy Velton, sr.; Ben Padrnos, sr.; Stephen Sabish, so.

What to know: Velton, who also started on the basketball team, finished last season with the best competitive round of his career, a 78 that lifted him into a tie for 30th overall in the state tournament. Castle is convinced that he can use that as a springboard to a breakout season.
