Ramsey blog: Superb new basketball book places Bill Russell as 23rd best player in NBA history. (Yes, that’s right. No. 23)
Johnny Carver is a college student at the University of Arkansas. He’s a basketball freak, and I mean this in a good way. Severe health complications forced him to abandon his playing career and focus on writing.
His new book “Ranketology: A New Way of Determining Basketball Greatest Player” is a well-written, often startling look at basketball history. It’s available on Amazon.com.
Carver uses a complicated formula that combines individual statistics with team accomplishments to determine the top 25 players in NBA history.
I’ll spoil a little of the drama and reveal Carver’s formula determined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the greatest player in NBA history.
Here’s the shock, at least for me:
Bill Russell is ranked No. 23, according to Carver’s formula.
Um, Russell won 11 titles in 13 seasons. He doesn’t have enough fingers for all his championship rings.
