Vince Gill won’t need to showboat at Pikes Peak Center

7 p.m. Wednesday, Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave., $47-$62; 520-7469, ticketswest.com.

Country music star Vince Gill may have sold more than 26 million albums, won 20 Grammys (the record for a male country artist) and 18 Country Music Association awards, but he still comes off as just a humble guy.

Witness the tender performance of his 1995 uber-popular song, “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” that he and fellow country singer Patty Loveless sang at George Jones’ funeral in 2013. Or the interview he gave Rolling Stone last year on today’s popular young country stars:

“I want these kids to live their dreams, want them to be musical, to do what’s in their hearts. I don’t have anything but a cheerleader brain for young people. I understand how evolution works, how this business works, how it’s always worked. And that’s the way it’s supposed to happen.”

Gill will perform Wednesday at the Pikes Peak Center.

The singer songwriter knew music was his path even as a little kid. In 1979, four years after leaving high school, he joined Pure Prairie League as lead singer and recorded three albums with the band. Since then he’s performed with all the big names in country music, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007 and released 14 albums.

The latest, 2013’s “Bakersfield,” paired him with steel guitarist Paul Franklin to cover songs by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.

Music critic Piet Levy of Milwaukee’s Journal Sentinel caught one of Gill’s tour stops earlier this year.

“But a more remarkable take-away of a very special 2 1/2 hours of music was the complete lack of vanity from the 57-year-old Gill,” Levy wrote. “He may be a better player and singer, he may feel an inherent need to prove his worth some two decades past his days of country radio dominance, but showboating clearly wasn’t his prerogative.”
