WASHINGTON — Federal regulations require Army National Guard units in southern states whose lineage reaches back to the Civil War to fight under emblems that honor their battles for the Confederacy.

While not as instantly recognizable or divisive as the stars and bars of the Confederate battle flag, the campaign streamers — narrow strips of fabric that signify a unit’s involvement in a fight — do pay homage to their rebellion against the Union. South Carolina is among the states with National Guard units whose flags carry streamers indicating their side in the Civil War.

Separately, the Army announced Wednesday that posts honoring Confederate generals such as Fort Bragg will not change their names.

The streamers’ design is dictated by U.S. Army regulations, requiring that those units place Confederate gray above Union blue. They also carry the name of the battle assigned to it by the South.
