Crews from the city of Colorado Springs worked Monday, June 15, to remove loose rocks, boulders and earth above the entrance to Tunnel No. 1 on Gold Camp Road west of town.

According to a Monday news release from the city, “The scaling operation will entail removing loose rocks and boulders or elements that have the potential to endanger motorists or other users of Lower Gold Camp Road in the area of the tunnels.”

Record amounts of rain in May have altered the landscape throughout the region. Crews also are monitoring conditions at city and county parks and some trails remain closed to public use.

Work on the the lower tunnels along Gold Camp Road is scheduled to continue Tuesday, June 16.
