Blog: Anti-Suthers robocalls make the rounds
Colorado Springs residents were treated to robocall Tuesday night that at first seemed to be pro-John Suthers for mayor.
But as the message played on, it became clear that it was an anti-Suthers message. The reader of the message sounds like a mattress salesman making a TV commercial pitch. “John Suthers for strong mayor . . . Suthers spent years getting tough of liberals, protesters and bums . . . Suthers is a clever lawyer who can avoid the law,” the caller shouts.
The caller does not identify who is paying for the advertisement.
Suthers said his campaign office started receiving calls and emails Tuesday night about the phone calls. Suthers is not behind the calls and added that his campaign is not making any robocalls.
Colorado Springs will vote April 7 for a new mayor. Six candidates — Tony Carpenter, Amy Lathen, Mary Lou Makepeace, Lawrence Martinez, Joel Miller and Suthers — are in the race. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters will face each other in a runoff election May 19.
