CC bids adieu to CenturyLink Center

The Tigers said goodbye to the cavernous CenturyLink Center after Saturday’s regular-season finale. When next CC plays in Omaha, it will be at the new $81.6 million, state-funded on-campus arena that hosts its first Nebraska-Omaha hockey game when the Mavericks take on Air Force for a nonconference series Oct. 23-24.

Fittingly enough, UNO’s first hockey victory (6-1) was against the Falcons on Oct. 26, 1997 at Cadet Ice Arena.

While still months away, the 7,800-seat facility – which will host UNO basketball, hockey and volleyball and some public events – is nearing completion at the intersection of Center and 67th streets on the college’s south campus.

UNO officials hope the new venue will provide a better home advantage after years of a half-empty 15,959-seat downtown venue about a five-minute drive from campus.

Hansen’s first goal a timely one

CC sophomore and St. Cloud, Minn., native Matt Hansen scored his first goal of the season and second of his career with his parents and most of the paternal side of his extended family on hand Friday.

“I am glad they got to see it,” he said.

Ice chips

Friday’s shootout win was the first since Nov. 22, 2013 at St. Cloud State and the Tigers’ second in two NCHC seasons. . CC sophomore goalie Tyler Marble entered Saturday’s regular-season finale with a 1.26 goals-against average and .965 saves percentage (109 saves on 113 shots) during the three-game unbeaten streak (1-0-2).
