Excited Sand Creek Scorpions sign national letters of intent

Amanda Timmermeyer and Makenna Fuhrmann will see a lot of familiar faces when they take the field to play college soccer this fall.

The Sand Creek seniors sat shoulder to shoulder Wednesday as they signed national letters of intent to play for coach Nicole Ridenour at Colorado-Colorado Springs, a team laden with Colorado Springs-area players. Timmermeyer and Fuhrmann helped the Scorpions to a school-best 15-3-1 record and a spot in the 4A state semifinals last spring and will be teammates for the next four years at the collegiate level.

“It’s going to be great, because I’ve known Makenna since middle school and will have a friend there,” said Timmermeyer, who was second on the team with 17 goals and 15 assists in 2014. “I know Lo Vyvlecka and Miranda Brown from there, so it’s going to be great having people I know there.”

UCCS’ roster last year also included area players from Rampart, Lewis-Palmer, Doherty, Palmer Ridge, Air Academy and Pine Creek, so Timmermeyer and Fuhrmann will feel much more at ease transitioning to college soccer than other freshmen around the nation.

“Usually, you don’t have the chance to go play soccer at a college with people you know, so it will be nice to have already have made friends on the team,” said Fuhrmann, who had eight goals and five assists for the Scorpions last season. “We’ll be more comfortable and relaxed about it. That will be a neat experience.”

Big news came out of the signing ceremony, as Timmermeyer – who would have been the Scorpions’ leading returning scorer entering this season – confirmed with The Gazette that she will not play for her high school team this spring. Instead, she will play for her club team, the Pride Predators 97.

“I feel like it’s going to get me more prepared for college,” Timmermeyer said.

Timmermeyer and Fuhrmann weren’t the only Sand Creek girls’ soccer players signing on the dotted line, as Karleen Pappert and Emily Cassady made their college choices known. Pappert, who allowed just five goals in 11 games in 2014, will play at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., and Cassady, one of the Scorpions’ leading defenders, signed to play at West Texas A&M.

Craig Decker, who coached the quartet of girls last year, has moved on to 5A Doherty but feels strongly they will excel at the next level.

“All four of them are great kids, and I’m excited to watch them go on to the next level,” Decker said. “I think all four girls are going to go to a program and impact it and play right away.”

Ashley Graham will appear in an ad campaign in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2015.
