‘Dancing With the Stars’ pros in town to strut and dish
8 p.m. Monday, Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave., $39.50-$79.50; 520-7469, ticketswest.com.
Fans of ABC’s popular dance competition, “Dancing With the Stars,” probably noticed a new face last season – Keo Motsepe.
The 24-year-old South African professional dancer was partnered with Olympic track star Lolo Jones but saw only one week of competition: They were the first couple voted off. Celebrity Alfonso Ribeiro, of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” fame, along with his pro partner, Witney Carson, won the coveted Mirrorball Trophy.
Motsepe, a former South African Latin Dance Champion and member of the “Burn the Floor” world tour, is now on tour with “Dancing With the Stars: Live!” He and six other professional dancers will stop at the Pikes Peak Center on Monday. And yes, that includes Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who spends much of the stage show minus his shirt, according to recent show reviews.
“It happens for a reason, and I’m so grateful,” Motsepe says about his early elimination. “If it didn’t, I don’t know how I’d be able to be doing what I’m doing at this moment. It was a chance to sit back and observe the whole show.”
The live show also includes performances by Carson, Kym Johnson, Emma Slater, Mark Ballas and Sasha Farber. Ribeiro is also along for the ride as host.
Freed from their celebrity partners, the pros freestyle and jive together, making for pitch perfect dance numbers, reviews say.
“It’s a very fun show,” Motsepe says. “When people watch show on TV, they don’t get to see the professionals really dance. You can see that here – a professional do what they love and why they do it.”
The evening includes more than dance numbers – a question-and-answer session hosted by Ribeiro allows fans to get a deeper look into each pro. Some even show off their multiple talents – Chmerkovskiy will play violin, and Ballas the guitar.
“On TV it’s all about the celebrities,” Motsepe says. “They can come see and get to know us even more.”
