It’s championship season for USA Curling.

Junior Nationals wrapped up last week, and Senior Nationals is underway this week in Minnesota. Next up: Men’s and Women’s Nationals, Men’s and Women’s Club Nationals and Mixed Nationals.

Curl Mesabi, an eight-sheet curling club in Eveleth, Minn., is hosting the Senior National Championships.

Eight women’s and 20 men’s teams are competing. The winners will represent the U.S. at the 2015 World Senior Championships, April 18-25, at the Ice Cube Curling Center in Sochi, Russia.

You have to be 50 or older to compete in the senior championships.

This year’s competition features several curlers who are previous national champions. Margie Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) is seeking her fourth senior national title. She is teamed up with fellow three-time champion Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), Peggy Gazzola (Apple Valley, Minn.), and two-time champ Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.).

Norma O’Leary (Two Harbors, Minn.), who won the title last year as vice skip for Smith, is back in the skip position with teammates Linda Christensen (Duluth, Minn.), Mary Shields (Duluth, Minn.), and Lucy DeVore (Superior, Wis.).

The Smith rink captured the bronze medal at worlds last season, ending a seven-year medal drought for the U.S. women’s program.

Jeff Wright’s team is back to defend its title. Wright (Libertyville, Ill.) is teamed up with Russ Armstrong (Lake Bluff, Ill.), Jim Wilson (Winnetka, Ill.), and Russ Brown (Lake Forest, Ill.). They finished fourth at the recent world championships.

Paul Pustovar’s team features Philip DeVore (Superior, Wis.) and three-time champions Brian Simonson (Hibbing, Minn.) and Don Mohawk (Nashwauk, Minn.). Pustovar won world senior gold in 2010 alongside Simonson and Mohawk.
