Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach presented five people with Mayor’s Young Leader awards on Wednesday, honoring individuals for efforts in their field while making a positive impact in the community. The event raised $9,000, which will be used for projects led by young leaders.

Twenty-one people were nominated. The winners are:

– Creative Industry – Jorden Smith for A Positive Note. Smith is a musician who experienced a traumatic brain injury. A Positive Note is meant to help young adults with disabilities create a sense of self-worth and accomplishment while learning the fundamentals of music.

– Economic Impact – Yemi Mobolade for The Wild Goose Meeting House. Mobolade says the Wild Goose Meeting House can inspire other investors to see the benefit of investing in Colorado Springs’ rich future. Mobolade has been asked to participate in the new public market project and the old train station.

– Innovation in Education – Wendy Birhanzel for work in Harrison School District 2. Birhanzel became the principal of two low-performing schools and within 2-3 years’ time at each school earned state and national awards for increasing achievement and decreasing the achievement gap. Currently, she is the curriculum, assessment and instruction officer for Harrison schools.

– Innovation in Sports and Wellness – Nikki McComsey, executive director for Kids on Bikes. Last year, Kids on Bikes led 2,780 hours of youth bike rides, taught 1,255 children bicycle safety skills, hosted summer mountain bike camps for kids aged 6-12 and provided 109 low-income children with a helmet, bike pump and bicycle.

– Future Industries – Conor McCluskey for BombBomb. BombBomb, founded in 2006, makes it easy for people to use simple videos to build relationships through digital means. This company has clients in 36 countries.
