Pueblo County Hornet Invite

At Pueblo County: In one of the biggest invites in southern Colorado, Class 4A Cheyenne Mountain reigned as champion in the 16-team invite.

It did it pretty convincingly too. Rhyann Lowrey won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute and 55.97 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:12.24. Marie Goodwyn took the 100 breaststroke (1:08.68) and Cat Wright won the 100 butterfly (57.14). Katie Liebscher added a win the 100 freestyle (53.34) and the Indians also won the 200 medley relay (1:48.62), as they dominated the meet with a score of 337.

No other team had more than two wins on the day. Jessica Chen won the 50 freestyle in 24.61 seconds and Rampart won the 400 freestyle relay (3:35) on its way to second-place finish with 241 points. Emily Dolloff-Holt (2:08.30) won the 200 IM and Manitou Springs won the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.21) en route to a third-place finish with a score of 175.

Isabella Farrell was the other area winner. The Palmer senior won the diving event with a score of 488 to help push Palmer up to 10th place with 37 points.

Discovery Canyon and Doherty tied for fifth with 91 points, followed by Coronado in eighth with 78, and Liberty in 15th with seven points.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Sand Creek 65, Palmer Ridge 62

At Palmer Ridge: Sand Creek coach Mark Bowers said the one thing he took away from Friday’s 69-58 win over Falcon was that his team was “resilient.”

The same carried true on Saturday.

With both teams on the second of back-to-back games, Sand Creek (10-3 overall, 5-0 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) held on to stay perfect in league.

George Silvanic hit a 3 in the waning seconds as Palmer Ridge (8-3, 2-3) went on a 6-1 run in the final minute to close the deficit to 63-62.

Cody Fox hit both of his free throws on the ensuing intentional foul, however, and the Scorpions again found a way to come up with a ‘W’.

Rampart 77, Palmer 63

At Palmer: Rampart (8-4 overall, 2-1 5A Metro League) broke the game open in the fourth quarter to beat Palmer (5-10, 1-3).

Donovan Oldham had 22 points, six rebounds and six assists as the Rams outscored the Terrors 29-13 in the fourth.

Rampart lost to Pueblo West and Doherty in heartbreaking fashion coming into Saturday’s game.

Discovery Canyon 64, Cheyenne Mountain 57

At Discovery Canyon: Discovery Canyon (2-10 overall, 0-3 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) snapped an eight-game losing streak and grabbed its first home win of the season.

Dante Fewell had 23 points and Jacob Hein added six points and 11 rebounds, as the Thunder outscored Cheyenne Mountain (3-8, 0-4) 19-7 in the third quarter to pull away for good.

Nathan Resty scored 16 points and Andrew Snug had 14 of his own in the Indians’ third consecutive loss.

Air Academy 57, Canon City 40

At Canon City: James Sims scored a team-high 16 points and Air Academy (10-3 overall, 3-1 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) won its third consecutive game.

Paul Ambuul had 13 and David Louthan added 11 for the Kadets, who started the game on a 14-4 run.

No individual stats were listed for Canon City.

St. Mary’s 94, Trinidad 64

At St. Mary’s: The Pirates scored a season-most 94 points in their rout over Trinidad.

Ben Padrnos had 25 points and Jimmy Velten added 19 in the win.

St. Mary’s (6-4 overall, 5-0 3A Tri-Peaks) remains side-by-side with CSCS atop the league standings.

James Irwin 74, Dolores Huerta Prep 70, OT

At James Irwin: Dante Blackburn broke a 70-70 tie late in overtime when he drove the lane and converted a three-point play with five seconds remaining.

That along with his 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists led James Irwin (4-5 overall, 2-2 3A Tri-Peaks) over Dolores Huerta Prep (2-10, 1-4).

Josh Mohammed had 20 points and Malique Chang added 14 of his own for the Jaguars, who snapped a two-game skid.

HOCKEY

Doherty 7, Mountain Vista 4

At Sertich: Doherty hockey coach Will English was on a business trip in Michigan when the Spartans faced off against heavily favored Mountain Vista.

To his delight, his team didn’t disappoint in his absence.

Dylan Sater scored two goals and Jake Komrofske added his team-lead 14th goal of the season, as Doherty (6-3 overall, 2-3 Peak Conference) beat the previously undefeated Golden Eagles on Saturday.

English said the win was a defining moment for the program.

“This is huge for our program,” the second-year coach said. “This put us in a position to be recognized across the state and really helped give some recognition to hockey in Colorado Springs outside Lewis-Palmer. This will give us momentum going forward.”

Mountain Vista was a perfect 7-0 coming into the game, outscoring opponents 59-8 in that stint.

Palmer 3, Coronado 2

At World Arena: Justin Hughes scored two goals and Palmer (2-8 overall, 1-5 Peak Conference) held on to beat Coronado (0-8, 0-4).

Conner Downs made it 3-0 for the Terrors with a goal late in the second period. But Tanner Mayberry and Marley Machin each scored in the third period to pull the Cougars with one.

Jake Palmer made 19 saves on 21 shots to secure the victory for Palmer.

Liberty 6, Rampart 0

At Sertich: Jason Rivera scored twice and Chase Johnson added his team-leading 10th goal of this season. Liberty (3-6-1 overall, 1-3-1 Peak Conference) held Rampart (2-9, 1-6) to 12 shots and goalie Matt Huyge stopped all of them as the Lancers snapped a three-game losing skid.

Monarch 6, Lewis-Palmer 0

At Boulder Valley: After two nice wins against Denver East and Valor Christian, Lewis-Palmer (6-5) had no answer for undefeated Monarch.

The Coyotes outshot the Rangers 33-11, as Blake Bride finished with two goals in the win.

Marcus Smith made 27 saves in the loss.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sand Creek 73, Palmer Ridge 58

At Sand Creek: Oliana Squires had a game-high 19 points and Liah Davis added 18 in Sand Creek’s fifth consecutive win.

The Scorpions (8-3 overall, 4-0 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) outscored Palmer Ridge (6-4, 2-2) by 15 points in the second quarter to pull away, and stand alone atop the league standings.

Sam Rippley scored in the double digits for the eighth time this season and finished with 18 points in the loss.

Pueblo South 45, Air Academy 32

At Air Academy: Kassady Huffman had her sixth consecutive double-double performance but Air Academy (6-7) couldn’t keep up with Pueblo South.

Huffman had 14 points and 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. The rest of the offense struggled, however, and the Kadets tied their season low for points in a game.

In the previous two games, the Colts held Falcon to 19 points and Coronado to 23 points. Their winning streak is at six games.

Peyton 65, Yuma 45

At Peyton: Sarah Logar had 21 points and Darielle Evans added 18 of her own as Peyton (8-0) stayed perfect on the season.

The Panthers put the game out of reach when they outscored Yuma 14-5 in the third quarter to build a 49-33 lead headed into the fourth.

Peyton has won all but one of its games by double-digit margins this season.

James Irwin 35, Dolores Huerta Prep 26

At James Irwin: Kiara Mattern had 13 points and Monique Gonzalez had 14 rebounds in the first win of the year for James Irwin (1-7).

The Jaguars outscored Dolores Huerta Prep 17-6 after they netted only two points in the first quarter and trailed 12-10 at half.

Aleah Brenner added 11 points in the win.

WRESTLING

Alamosa High School Wrestling Tournament

At Alamosa: Leon Sanchez (120 weight class), Samuel Freeman (138) and Devon Roettger (145) all won gold for Mesa Ridge.

Sanchez beat Delta’s Jayden Chynoweth 12-0, Freeman beat ThunderRidge’s Alex Bezugly 13-4 and Roettger pinned Rocky Ford’s Diego Reyes in 3 minutes and 49 seconds.

Dylan Eaton (132) and Logan Beatty (182) added second-place finishes in the tournament win.

Mesa Ridge won the 11-team tournament with a score of 184. Delta finished second with 172.5.

Mel Smith Husky Invitational

At Florence: Discovery Canyon’s Sam Turner and Palmer Ridge’s Jonathan Dela-Cruz Flores both took home championships Saturday.

Turner beat Valley’s Ruben Lucero 2-1 in overtime in the 132 class to help lead the Thunder to a ninth-place finish with 106 points. And Flores pinned Lamar’s Tanner Crist in 6 minutes and 40 seconds at 220 to lead the Bears to a 15th-place finish with 73.

Canon City took sixth (136), Cheyenne Mountain took seventh (120), Florence finished 13th (77). TCA was 22nd (34.5), Manitou Springs was 23rd (34) and Woodland Park took 26th and St. Mary’s finished 28th in the 29-team tournament.

Lamar won the meet with 189 points.

Arvada West Classic Invitational

At Arvada: Coronado’s Jess Hankin beat Pomona’s Jason Romero to take home gold in the 132 class.

His Cougars finished fifth with 104 points and Fountain-Fort Carson took 14th with 34 in the 15-team invite. Arvada West won the meet with 185 points.
